Stuff and Cloud Roads squee

I was in NJ this weekend for a weekend with a lovely cousin, which was capped off marvelously with a lunch at Biang in Flushing with the delightful miss_porcupine. Pigs blood tofu was really delicious and far less exciting/out there than I thought it would be from its description. It made me think of a softer (and much better tasting) chicken liver. And that ( Read more... )

That series is so great. Wait until you read the next one! I'm so glad she's writing them so quickly, and we don't have to wait ages and ages between books. You'll be unsurprised to learn that Stone is my favourite, but really I love them all.

I'm a quarter of a way into the Serpent Sea now! I love Stone, though Jade and Moon beat him by a hair in the battle for my affections :D

Is blood tofu the Asian version of black pudding? If so, I can totally understand why it would be tasty. I mean, I've been a vegetarian for two decades now, and never lapsed, but aside from the Christmas goose the local fried black pudding type (which is mostly oats mixed with blood and some spices and raisins put in) is one of the few dead-animal foods I miss. TBH I've sometimes thought that it would be nice if we didn't get the blood from slaughtered animals, but harvested like some herders elsewhere do without killing them, and then I could eat this from time to time, because it wouldn't that much worse than dairy, which I can't quit (and which production also obviously causes some animal suffering and death, even if you don't eat them directly).

Argh, how'd I forget to respond for so long /o\ And, as far as I can tell, it's congealed pig's blood that's then been boiled, and it was served with chili oil and thinly sliced vegetables (cucumbers and scallions mostly). I was in Germany for a bit and was really excited about trying black pudding, but was on a pretty tight schedule and the one place it was an option had run out of it :( Someday, I shall find a place to give me black pudding again!
