I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I've been a lead programmer at Obsidian for some months now, maintaining the ongoing support for NWN2 that we released last year. At Google, everyone is encouraged to pick and work upon a side project - if they see a need that's not being addressed, something that requires one or a few programmers to pull off, they go to it. I think it's a valuable resource for programmers who are stuck navigating the labyrinths of distributed code even if the side projects don't pan out. Forces people to look at the trees occasionally instead of the forest.
