Whoa: poking through your fic archive and - Earthsea! This is great, especially its battered and subdued Ged - one of my favourite things about the book is how hard he has to struggle to learn humility:

“Master...” Sparrowhawk says presently. “I wish I had listened to you.”

And the staff-making scene is very effective, calm but strung through by tension.
