Thoughts on the new anime so far?

Nov 06, 2011 13:03

I've been posting thoughts on the new anime at my own journal lately, but I figured I'd do it here this time, because I'm curious to hear what everyone else thinks about it so far.

It's episode 6 already this week, and I have to admit that I've completely gotten used to the style of the new anime, even though I don't neccesarily love everything ( Read more... )

I really WANT to like this anime, so if I'd nitpick at every little thing it'd take away the enjoyment for me. So I'm just liking everything there is to like, and ignoring the points that are not so good. (It's not like the old anime will go anywhere, it's always there for us to go back to and enjoy) I know what the original characters are like, they are already well established in my head, so I don't miss anything in their interaction. I'm just seeing everything that is there in the new anime as a fun addition to everything that already exists. ^^ That's also why the animation quality doesn't bother me, I know what the characters look like already, so I can overlook it and be able to enjoy the anime for what it is. I actually like the fact that some things are cutesy-fied, because it's something that makes it different from the original adaptation.

I thought that the boob shot was there to emphasize that Netero was staring at Menchi, but I could be wrong. XD;

I agree so hard with this comment. Actually, I'm more a fan of the manga than any of the animes,but I don't want to compare them. If I want to revisit the manga or the first anime, they're there for me, and this new anime gives me something to watch with my boyfriend on Sunday mornings. There are some things I really like about it, like Hisoka's theme and Gon and Killua being adorable, and the things I don't like don't even bother me so much.

True, you'd think that at least Killua knows it, living in Japanese-style house and all... XD In the radio dramas he shows having some knowledge of Japanese food and culture as well.

It does have less filler, but it doesn't follow the manga exactly either. Last episode showed not just some random applicants, but also the main characters struggling with the beasts in the swamp. And then the second exam was done almost entirely differently... It was fun though. =D

About the wall-bombing - Just like with the sushi thing, doesn't it create inconsistencies later on in the series? I mean, if Killua really had bombs with him, why didn't they use those to blow up the wall to the short path in trick tower? XD;

Your icon is adorable! <3

Hmm, it could be.. I wonder why Killua was brought up so differently than his siblings though...

I liked it too, but I just thought that with Gon's insticts and knowledge of animals, he'd be smart enough to not fall into the frog's trap. XD So when they did, that almost gave me a heart attack, because I remembered that the random guys who fell into it originally, died! ^^;;

I really liked the anime up until episode 5. @_@ They changed a bunch of stuff in episode 5... From what I could tell from the previous episodes, the producers were trying to stay closer to the manga by cutting out filler and improving the pacing, but then episode 5 kind of backtracked on all of that?? They ADDED filler that wasn't there in the original anime (OR the manga) and slowed down the whole episode. Oh and they changed Hisoka's characterization--he was acting more out of self-defense because the others wanted to attack him. @_@ Hisoka is supposed to be a messed up, deranged murderer who gets off on people's pain, okay!! I feel like they're cutting out things they shouldn't cut out and spending too much time on things that are insignificant. ): So sometimes the pacing is really good, but a lot of times it's like this and all over the place. D: But I love Hunter x Hunter to pieces, so I'll continue watching no matter how bad it gets. T_T

Unfortunately, I agree with disliking the characterization being presented. Rather than having the characters bond through their hardships, this version is throwing out a bunch of shallow, cutesy bonding methods that just don't cut it for these types of characters. Maybe it's okay if you're just starting out and don't yet realize the depth and twistedness that resides within the main four's personalities, but in that case part of the reason you don't realize it is that this version of the anime is cutting out everything that reveals it ( ... )

I feel like it's BECAUSE I already know the depth of the character's personalities, that the cutesyness doesn't bother me. It's a nice and fresh approach, and it's fun to see the characters act like this for a change. It's not like this new anime is 'replacing' the old one in any way, it's just another, different adaptation. But that's probably just me being weird. ^^;

I totally agree about the second exam though, it was brilliant and perfect in the original, so I didn't see the need to change anything there.

Haha, I can understand that. I like the cute when it's done right. Like during the first phase of the first exam, Gon and Killua deciding to race. That was done so well, and I adored it because it was cutesy but it also fit the characters. I think my favorite part was when the two of them simultaneously moved to the right side of the screen without any explanation, and it's only a few seconds later that you see that there was someone sprawled out on the stairs in their way. They're not in the least bit bothered by the people going down around them, and it was so very like them. THAT was brilliant.

Getting swallowed by the frog-in-waiting was the same way. They got caught easily, but they also got out easily, unfazed. It was adorable and very like them.

Madhouse tried to do the same in episode 6 with sliding down the hill, but they went too far with that one. That took Killua's "everything's a game" philosophy and turned it into him being reckless and unalert, which he really never is ( ... )

Yeah, I noticed that too! They were just evading the bodies of the collapsed applicants like it was nothing! XD;; That was so funny!

About the sliding scene, I have to admit that I paused and rewinded a couple of times thinking, 'did he just DO that!?' But in the end I found it more funny/cute than bothersome, and I'm hoping that these changes in Killua's personality now, will serve the purpose of making the shock bigger when we finally do find out what he really can be like. Hopefully next episode... But if it doesn't, and he just stays like this the entire time... then that would really suck. XP;

I have a love-hate relationship with the new anime. I love it, because it's so good to see the characters again <3. But I hated ep. 6. I've been waiting for the sushi part since the beginning, because in the original anime that was the part where I felt that I really love these characters and I got hooked on... and now they cut it out :(. And the characterization seems weird... I have a feeling that "yeah, these characters are Gon/Kurapica/Killua/etc, yet they don't seem the same". Maybe it's because of the little scenes that some of you already pointed out (for example the "Kurapica didn't go back to Leorio" thing).
But I'm waiting for the York shin city arc... if that'll be good, then I'll be happy :).

I'm really wondering how they'll handle the York shin arc too, the current mood the series is setting (and the BGM) just doesn't seem like it would fit with that arc. I hope they'll introduce some new, more fitting music when they get to that point.
