My sister has been in the psych ward at St. John's for several days and is doing very well. The ward is organized with a strict schedule, which Josette has never had (other than school) for her whole life, and she's finding it empowering. She could use social security money. If she can provide documentation of her mental disorder, she could absolutely go that route. Talk to her doctor to find out what to do or who to call.

i haven't known what to say about all of this, except that I hope that she can manage to pull through with this. It would be really cool if she could get a college degree and do that.

There are quite a few government grants like the Pell grant. For a long shot there's a competitive grant called the National Research Service Award that would not hurt to apply for since it covers behavioral science types of degrees. The Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation does mostly loans but they will occasionally also provide grants, so they would be a good place to contact for options, but beware because they are also out to make money so it's not good to get a loan as far as interest goes. Other than that, hit up the library and look for independent grants, there are probably a lot of old funds that people don't know how to look for at like Wayne State or Michigan-Flint.
