To learn about the beauty of layer masks today, we shall employ Bou! To go from
to
Alright! To begin, do whatever you need to to your picture. We're not doing anything to your base image so get it how you want! Now depending on what mask you use, you'll want your picture to fit inside it. You won't see the whole image, so it's ok if it's small.
I used this pic of Bou from An Cafe.
Next, with the image layer highlighted(I know the background layer is in the picture), go up to Layer->Add Layer Mask->Hide All.
If you've done this correctly, the image will disapear and you'll see a black square on the same layer as your pic.
You can click between the two squares on that layer, so make sure you're on the black one(if you don't touch anything it already should be highlighted.) Now, it's time to add the mask. I got mine from a set from Yumei-K found
here. Her site is sometimes down so if you can't get a hold of a frame, scroll down to the bottom of this tutorial for an image pack and a short tut on how to pick a mask and set it as a brush.
So, setting your brush color to WHITE(or else it won't work) stamp your mask on your invisible picture. Whatever the brush shape, your image will apear in that shape. Pretty neat, huh? ^^ You can use the pointer tool to drag your image around to whereever you want it.
Next it's time to pick your background. I got mine from a set from
grrliz_icons. Here are a few examples to pick from, or check out her others(she's fantastic!).
Set it to the layer underneath your image.
Now, to add the ripped looking bit. Adding a new layer on top, I used a brush from Natrual Brushes, which is preset into Photoshop. Mess around a bit until you get what you want. The color I used was #F01349
There are two ways to make the white bit(so it looks ripped) so I'll explain them both. It's just a matter a preference. The first way is to add a layer underneath the pink one, make your brush white and hand draw in the torn bit, varying it so that only a bit is exposed. I, however, perfer another way. Duplicate your pink layer. With the bottom layer highlighted, go up to Layer->Layer Style->Blending Options. Click "Color Overlay" and set it to white. Then, using your pointer tool move the under-layer so that only a bit peeks out. This way, the white part is exact.
Now add your text.
The brushes you add are all up to you! I'm pretty sure they all came from Yumei-K, but I'll supply you with two of them. For the skull brush just copy this layer onto your icon and set it to Multiply. For the arrow, set it to screen. Vary the opacity on either layer to achieve the desired effect.
More things I did are made a new layer, used the rectangle tool, set the color to white and made a white box sort of underlining my text, you can set this to soft light. Also, adding a new layer(under the skull and arrow), using the same pink I made a rectangle at the top, and lowered the opacity.
And your done! Enjoy!
I need a frame brush!
Alright, so here's the image pack.
Open this as a new image in Photoshop and crop it down to the frame you want to use. (I used the first one) Now go up to Edit->Define Brush Preset. It doesn't matter what you call it.
Now this brush will appear at the bottom of whatever brush pack you had open and you can use it for this tut!
