You didn't mention those fics which leave an empty space where the character's name should be, so that readers can insert themselves into the story XD for me, that's the worst way of writing fiction.
Anyway, this helped me a lot. Tried the mary-sue test and I'm glad my two precious characters are safe X_x

One example.
It looks funny there how the OC is adressed with "[name]" xD other people put "you" everywhere in the story, damn difficult to actually enhoy it *cough*

Do you realize author that in canon ( HP) Ginny Weasley satisfies beautifully all the hallmarks/criteria of a Mary Sue? From book 1 -4 she is described as shy introvert and reticent. Then all of a sudden she metamorphosizes ( without rhyme or reason) into a fiery super hot extraordinarily beautiful girl who is wanted by all boys. Your writing tips and inputs are priceless a must for would be authors. Your writing tips are impeccable and your fics sheer delight.
