What I enjoyed most about Rose was the closeness that she had with the Doctor (both Nine and Ten). They seemed so very in sync that for me it was hard not to get drawn into the stories, no matter how iffy they might seem otherwise. And I agree that Rose seemed very "real" in a lot of ways. (I still don't get the hate toward her, though I admit to being a bit sick of every other new story on Teaspoon *still* being about her.)
It was like that with Donna too, although the vibe was different. It's so rare that a male and female lead are presented as "just" friends, with the friendship for its own sake suiting both of them perfectly and no need for it to become "more". David and Catherine pulled that off so beautifully that no TARDIS team since then has even come close, IMO.
