Application: Elric of Melnibone (the Elric Saga)

Apr 29, 2009 00:59

A strangely-dressed albino pushed his long, milk-white hair back from his face, staring about the room with wide, cat-like eyes of deep crimson. His eldritch features marked him as one of the line of ancient Melnibone, which he was soon to learn would mean very little here. The muscles in his lithe body tensed in expectation as he surveyed the room ( Read more... )

Oh, this might be fun.

Sadako took on a relatively unthreatening aspect as she allowed herself to become visible; dripping seawater but not openly decayed. She peeked at Elric from behind her tangled curtain of hair and gave a girlish giggle.

"Oh, that outfit doesn't work at all! You need a pretty pink dress with white ribbons."

Sadako might have discovered the works of Mark Ryden.

Elric examined Sadako, at the ready, although he didn't appear at all frightened. Merely wary, and bewildered as to why she would say he needed a dress. "Are you an elemental of the waters? Why would I need a dress?" He asked this question in complete seriousness. Comprehending humor appeared to be one of the albino's weak points.

"Who, me? I'm not an elemental of anything." She turned up her aura of dread a notch, even as she kept her voice girlish and giggly. "I'm just me. And a pink dress would be just adorable, especially if it had an eyelet trim. It would suit you."

Even if she wasn't an elemental, she was something that wasn't properly human. Elric had seen a long list of 'indescribable things of Chaos', and so very little actually frightened him anymore, but, there was something about her energy that suggested he stay wary of this giggly creature. "I do not understand why I would need a dress. Is it some custom of this plane? What kind of spirit are you? You are not human, although you wear the shape."

Zel raised an eyebrow. And I thought I was depressed. "Your sword fights for itself, against your will?"

Although Zel looked odd, his question sounded sane enough. Elric presumed that he was likely another multiversal voyager. The albino must have been pleased with this question, as he nodded solemnly and spoke in a dry, hollow voice, laced with (well-practice) anguish. "My sword serves my will as well, but, it extracts a heavy price. At times, it serves its own whims. It has a bad habit of killing my friends."

"Why not get rid of it and find a more... obedient sword?" Elric's appearance reminded Zelgadiss far too much of Halcyform the White, though there was at least a decent chance that Elric wouldn't try to steal people's life force to resurrect his beloved. One hoped, anyway.

"I have tried, but, it always returns, as it is my fate to wield it." He speaks with a deep melancholy, glowering moodily at the sheathed blade. "And I am forced to rely upon it- it sustains me, and I in turn sustain it, upon the souls of our enemies. But sometimes it has a mind of its own, and always seems to choose those that I love the most."

((*had a mad gigglefit at 'Our ancestors of R'lin K'ren A'a walked with demons themselves, and, you call us "you guys" and consult me for our knowledge of paperwork?' Well done, sir.))

Mr. Wednesday cracked a sour smile. "Howl for Arioch as much as you like. This isn't quite a godsforsaken place entirely, but I suspect the closest thing to a Lord of Chaos you'll get around here is the Sorting Hat."

Finally, someone who sounded like they might know what they were talking about, who appeared relatively respectable. "I keep hearing of this Hat, sir- is this Hat a tyrant ruler which needs to be destroyed?" He was starting to get somewhat confused- no one seemed to have an issue with being here, or with anything at all for that matter. "I have already noticed that my Patron is either not inclined to listen at the moment, or, does not have access to this plane. Are you from this world?"

"Yes and no. I'm more a native of this place, if not this plane, than a personage such as yourself could be. You can call me Mister Wednesday." The old god eyed Stormbringer with a sort of wary and distasteful respect -- for the blade, not for its wielder. "As for the Hat, it could be termed a tyrant, but the most harmless and amusing variety if so, and that's a moot point in any case, since I suspect it may very well be indestructable."

Elric listened curiously to Wednesday, nodding thoughtfully at his explanation. "Perhaps the Hat is an artifact of some sort- it would not be the first apparently indestructible and sentient item that I have met. But I am pleased to hear it is of a harmless and amusing sort, if so. Others are of a very different nature." He glanced at the black blade slung to his hip with a frown. He'd not missed that Wednesday had noticed it and reacted in a way that suggested he recognized its nature. "It seems that you may be aware of those as well."

"I am Elric of Melnibone." He bowed politely towards Wednesday. "I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Mister Wednesday. It appears that you are somewhat more familiar with certain concepts that are familiar to me than others here. Perhaps you might have some theories on the nature of this place? Do you know if it is under the rule of Law or Chaos? Some indications seem to suggest Chaos, but, others suggest that it is neither one."

((Is there any possible way for you to be more awesome? If so, I haven't discovered it yet. Truly epic lols.))

While not actively searching for miserable people to snicker over, it was just Kurama's luck that he happened to find one. It was his cat's fault, really. Belophoebe had decided that she was to explore, and that her pet human-demon-creature was to follow along and open doors for her. One of those doors being, of course, the one for the Sorting Room.

He looked down at Elrich for a moment as the man huddled in his private pile of gaudy angst before scanning the application. Kurama was a demon who took great pride in his willpower, but it was taking every ounce of it not to howl with laughter over what the quill had transcribed. He had never, in all his long life, actually met a grown man with a maudlin streak quite as powerful as this.

Belophoebe had distracted herself by sniffing curiously at Elrich, not coming close enough to touch (or something so plebeian as petting, unless she felt like it) and after a moment gave ( ... )

((Awww, I'm happy that Elric seems to be being enjoyed. I wanted to bring in an alt that might prove entertaining, to open up some more RP opportunities. Good to have a few chars for that.))

Elric looked over Kurama and noticed Belophoebe, and actually managed a slight smile at the feline. He attempted to greet her in the language of cats, which he knew, as Melniboneans had links with many natural spirits. The link with cats was one of the strongest, even reflected in the Melnibonean lineage's cat-like eyes. Of course, due to the translation charm, the bizarre sound he tried to utter came out as "Hello" to anyone else's ears. Only after greeting the cat did he turn to answer Kurama, who admittedly looked pretty normal to him. He'd seen a lot odder things than fox parts. There was something interesting about him- he almost appeared to have a touch of Melnibonean blood himself ( ... )

"Me?" He did laugh at that, earning a scalding look from Belophoebe, who had taken a bit to Elric. " Oh, no. I'm just a teacher here. The master is... well, a cognizant toy, but we see little or nothing of it. There is also the Hat, but if you're lucky, you'll only meet him once."

"My apologies for any offense sir. I had not been told that the master of this place was a sentient toy. I have heard of this Hat, but, it is interesting to learn that there is another in charge as well." The idea of a plane dominated by Misrule rather than Chaos seemed even more likely in light of this revelation.

"As you are a teacher here, do you perhaps know the purpose of this place besides teaching? Are the students being trained for a purpose?" A constant note of sadness seemed to hang in Elric's voice, even when he wasn't dwelling on doom and gloom, but he looked down at Belophebe and gave the cat a slight smile. It was somehow comforting to know that cats dwelled here- perhaps it meant he would be able to call on a cousin of Meerclar, who represented the spirit of all cats upon his plane.

La Fee Verte had decided she needed to venture into the Sorting Room more often. Really, some of the new applicants were so droll, and there were a few gems like that Jasper creature. She thrived on conviviality (well, that and feeding addictions) and how better to become known as a great hostess than to greet newcomers?

This application proved most interesting. She looked at Elric with a bartender's sympathy.

"Dearie, what you need is a good stiff drink."

Elric stared curiously at the woman for a moment. She looked basically basically normal, aside from being green. "Are you of the lineage of Terhali the Green Empress?" It seemed a logical possibility to him, still unaware just how far from his own plane he was. In fact, his own most likely didn't exist right now, for, it was a relic of an older cycle of the multiverse. "Ah, for a bottle of the ancient wine of Melnibone, never has there been any so fine, for we bottled not only the fruits of the Dragon Isle, but visions and dreams."

"A green Empress? How positively delightful!" She smiled warmly. "Not that I know of, sweetheart. And it may not be what you're pining for, but there are visions and dreams aplenty in a bottle of absinthe. Would you like some?"

Being a native of the Dragon Isle, Elric was quite familiar with a wide range of drugs, as they were a favorite pasttime of his decadent race. Absinthe was one he'd not heard of, however. "The Green Empress Terhali ruled the Dragon Isle is ages long past, and was said to be the child of a demon. You do not have the aspect of a demon, my lady, but you are very beautiful, as she was rumored to be. What is absinthe?"
