on "living canon" and the siren call of spoilers

Jan 25, 2006 10:36

Here's a thing I hadn't considered about entering/embracing a new fandom: Spoilers.

I haven't been seriously engaged in a fandom with a live canon since Buffy went off the air. And by "engaged" I mean thinking about it a lot, speculating on what might happen, being impatient to see the next installment because ohmygod I have to know what happens ( Read more... )

tv, galactica, joss whedon is dead to me, fandom, dreams

*sigh*

I really, REALLY need to see BSG. If the Firefly DVDs somehow found their way into my local pirate joint distributor, why shouldn't this one?

I think I'm strange - spoilers don't normally bother me. Which is why I tend to blab on about films I've seen to my friends who've yet to see them, and they get all pissy with me because I unwittingly let something big slip. I buy all the film mags, and when I have the internet I cruise it for any tiny detail. So yeah, I'm not sure why, but it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of it. I think I may be the only person in the universe to feel that way though.

Re: your dreams -

You are a strange, strange girl. And for once, I'm not envious of your cool fandom dreams, because anybody in itty bitty banana-hammock Speedos scares me silly. *shudder*

My main problem with spoilers is that though I desperately want to know what's going to happen, one of my favorite things on earth is watching it all happen for the first time, not knowing what's coming. I think seeing FotR as a complete Tolkien virgin cemented that for me. Though I sometimes wish I'd discovered the universe earlier, via the book, watching that story unfold and having no idea at all where it was going was amazing. There's only one first time of anything, and just so much joy in it for me.

I read lots of entertainment magazines, but they're generally pretty good about not giving away key plot points. And any time they put a spoiler warning in, I seriously consider whether I want to know before I go there. Like, I didn't mind Goblet of Fire movie spoilers because I already knew the plot points that were happening. But I don't want any HP7 book spoilers.

Re: My dreams--My brain is weird. I have no other explanation. Except to say that divers, as a species, are teh hot, and so was FJH.

Speedos in general are wrong, unless they're on Olympic swimmerboys like Michael Phelps or Ian Thorpe. If FJH looked like that then I don't particularly mind.

granted my mind today is shorted out by way too much european porn, so YMMV.

I agree. Speedos are for Olympic swimmers and divers only. FJH was in fact portraying a diver in my dream, and I'm going to decide now that he was an Olympic diver, so it was all good.

Sadly, Olympic swimmerboys these days seem to prefer those bodysuits, for the sake of smoothness in the water and speed and whatnot. I've seen the Thorpedo in them.

But you know who's staying loyal to the (teeny-tiny) speedos? Olympic platform/springboard divers.

Google Alexandre Despatie and knock yourself out.

And this would be a good place to mention Phelps' swim suit, which he wears obscenely low.

*sighs* Spoilers. Most of the time I give up and just embrace them. I just know that no matter how hard I try to avoid them, no matter how much experience I have in doing so,I'll just end up clicking some completely innocent-looking cut and die a spoilery death. Not to mention I also have spoilery RL friends, who are very kind and are very happy to tell you just what is about to happen, whether you like it or not.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Speedo dream. I do know, however, that now there needs to be a FJH Speedo, to go with the fandom pants. Yes, I know it's insane, no, I don't care.

It appears that my reaction to spoilers is directly related to my investment in the object of my fannish affection. Like, if I had started BoB with a list of guys who survived (or, conversely) were killed, I would have been really bummed, because part of the experience of watching that story unfold is OMG STOP BLOWING MY BOYS UP!!

I'm pretty sure the Speedo dream was my twisted brain's way of making up for killing the poor man this weekend. And FJH Fandom Speedo needs to happen. J, honey, as the only boy, you're gonna have to pony up.

I need to lose five pounds to be able to take my shirt off in public. Ten pounds to turn heads when I do it. For a speedo, it'll probably take twenty then add five-ten more as muskle. I'll work on it.

Well, the part where he grabs me, pushes me to the ground, and rolls over on top of me to shield me harm, yes... but the part where he gets hit with the destroy ray thingy, no! *bawls*
