Snack? Um. Tosti kaas en ham. It always reminds me of the good bits of Euro hacker culture: "Hey, guys. Let's write some cool open-souce code, then drink beer and listen to Humppa. But first, tosti kaas!" There was a set of people from some domain registry or other giving them away at HAR2009. It wasn't the local equivalent of a kebab van, because ( Read more... )

That prompted a sudden flash of memory, or late nights in Goodrick snack bar on York campus, hanging out with the Jorvick crowd; Trafford, Petes Fenelon (RIP) and French, John Halewood, Steer, and various others, eating toasties and talking crap. I had to think hard for a moment to decide whether you were there or not. You should have been.

Dodgy-looking curry places seem to be the best. The dodgiest one I ever went to (with both Petes, as it happens) was somewhere in Bradford, and they covered the table in huge naan bread; side dish-cum-tablecloth. Bloody marvellous food, costing somewhere around 37 of your old pennies.

... You should have been.

Thank you. That's a lovely thing to say.

I think it's just me being me, but I'm not enough of a foodie to just care about the grub. It's everything else that surrounds it. Mostly I couldn't even tell you what it was, but the other stuff...

I had a very good restaurant experience on the Kelvinside bit of Sauchiehall Street last year. Mother India's, it was, who it turned out already had an Edinburgh branch we hadn't been to. I remember wondering if the people at the next table were Camera Obscura or whether they looked familiar for another reason.

Best sarnie: Tandoori chicken sandwich from King's Snack Bar on Chalton Street, London. Made with actual real tandoori chicken, not some pre-processed pap out of a tub, and they'll even give you mango chutney or a squeeze of lemon juice. It was the best thing about the one day I worked for an absolutely shitty company on Euston Road.
