Arcas had been away for a very complicated and unexpected reason and he meant what he said about not expecting to return. Therefore, addressing the residents of the complex again was embarrassing to him. It had taken more than he would admit to apologize and to face them after the shame of the events he hoped they would never know. He spent the majority of the day pacing, anxious since he was not to begin work until Monday. He considered buying Penelope a Christmas present, but it felt forced. Instead, he eventually ventured out only to cease the wearing on his floors and ended up buying a bottle of wine for them to share. He was oblivious to the date, thinking New Year's Eve was the next night, else he might have bought champagne ( ... )

She should have known he'd be punctual. She was going to have to answer the door looking like this. The idea was so unsettling that she contemplated ignoring the knock and hurrying into her room to clean up before she answered the door. No, that would be rude, she could not leave him standing in the hallway because she was unprepared. She took a deep breath and forced herself to cross to the door. It took another deep breath and a moment of quiet reassuring before she could finally open it.

There he was. It was a shock to see him, even though she knew he was coming. There was a long silence as she rudely stared at him. Of course he would look well put together and polished. He was presenting the very image she had wanted to present herself. Then she remembered he was standing in the hallway and she was blocking the door. This was going well so far.

"Arcas, hello. Come in," she said softly, stepping to the side to allow him entry. She hoped this hadn't been a bad idea.

"Would you like more time? I am certain I could entertain myself a few minutes longer if it is needed," he replied with less charisma and flow than normal. His anxiety was a tightness in his chest he could not begin to shake and it held through to his posture and his tone. While he did not look or sound ill or unpleasant, he was lacking that extra hint that made him the charming, smooth man he was hired to be by so many public relations' firms. He could only hope she would not comment on the matter, even if she happened to notice, for then he could continue to believe that she had not noticed at all ( ... )

She smiled at him apologetically, though the smile didn't quite reach her eyes. She noticed the difference in him and was sure it had something to do with seeing her again. He'd left so quickly after the..incident. She couldn't understand why he wanted to see her again, and so soon after arriving back in town. Hearing the less polished tone of voice only further convinced her that whatever had happened between them had been a mistake and that it was something he deeply regretted ( ... )
