The children are spending the second half of half term with Tim, partly at my mum's house and partly at his parents' house. I've just waved them off and miss them already - the house is suddenly incredibly quiet! Not that I am really complaining

That sounds brilliant.

But given what *I* want to do if *I* get a day alone in my house, have you considered a can of paint and a big paint-roller at all? A nice bright colour can look good even over half-peeled woodchip wallpaper. I really, really love painting the insides of my house.
