Excited at the opera house (Tag Clayton Webb)

Yuri had a difficult time deciding what to sing for her tryout at the opera. She'd ended up with two songs from a musical that showed a decent range. She could sing some soprano, but probably not a lead role. Still, she was confident in this, if not quite as much as she had been of her shooting at the range. She was wearing a classic dress but knew ( Read more... )

The orchestra's rehearsal has just finished, when one of the backstage workers peeks into the room, informing me there's a blue-haired woman looking for me. Well, that description doesn't match a lot of people, so I excuse myself from the musicians and go to find the trouble consultant who would also have liked to be a singer.

I really can't afford to let potential performers slip away, especially not now that my star tenor apparently has left the village - thank God not during a run. But I wouldn't want to make her wait anyway, I'm glad about everyone who's showing an active interest in the opera.

The opera house wasn't exactly a major haunt, so Yuri was looking around at everything. It was so glamorous! Even after having practiced and performed here (way too long ago), it all just seemed so old-fashioned. When she saw Clayton she smiled and waved.

"Ready for action. Not as nerve-wracking as auditioning for something specific." It felt more relaxed, just a showing of what she could do, really.

I return her smile and motion towards the room the choir usually practices in. Good acoustics an a piano.

"I'm curious what you chose. Do you want me to accompany you?" I can always improvise something if she's got no sheet music.

"If you want. If you don't, I can do it on my own."

She followed him into a room with a piano. Folded sheet music came out of her purse, which she held out.

"My Fair Lady," she said. "I practiced two songs--one with the thick accent and one not."

She was humming and making a few vocalizations--she warmed up, but it was cold out.

"Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and "I Could Have Danced All Night."
