"Beg pardon, sir," Anna was quick to say, looking down at his feet, purse with that strange messaging device held tight to her body. "I'm new to this place. I had just gone to services and ... I suppose I don't know my way 'round yet."
She'd told John she wasn't a lady, but John had said she was. With a deep breath, Anna offered her hand, too, for him to shake. "Mrs. Anna Bates," she said, taking a moment to glance at his face. She was almost startled, looking away again, her cheeks flushing. She'd never seen anyone quite so handsome in that way, a polished, sophisticated way.
