Room 330 - Wednesday Afternoon

Jan 09, 2013 16:43

Did people here know there was a portal from the school to Rio de Janeiro?  Because apparently there is.  And this morning, that portal had apparently decided to reverse itself to spit an annoyed and doused-in-rum Kate Bishop back onto Fandom ( Read more... )

After a morning of practicing at the range, followed by one class that had been interesting and one class that had been deeply horrifying, it occured to Alec to check on the Fandom-assigned little sibling he still hadn't met. He was almost expecting Room 330 to not exist as if no one had ever been assigned to live there, so he was almost a bit surprised when he saw an actual girl in there, unpacking her things.

"Katherine Bishop?" he guessed hopefully.

"Kate," she replied, glancing up at the guy. "You're - roommate or school-appointed welcoming committee?"

"The latter," Alec said, stepping a little further into the room to hold out his hand. "Alec Lightwood. Apparently I'm your 'big sibling.'"

The air quotes were audible, though not actually demonstrated.

"Oh good, I always wanted another one of those," Kate said dryly before flashing him a practiced smile as she shook his hand. "How did you get roped into that? Too many demerits?"

"More of a paperwork mix-up, I think," Alec answered, equally dryly. "But you'll be happy to know I have a few real younger siblings and nothing horrible has befallen any of them."

Yet. Poor Max.

"So it looks like you found your room," he observed, awkwardly adjusting the bow strap across his chest. That was a real brilliant observation there. "Off to a good start."

Kate was so not going to be the Max of this fake family. Just saying.

"This school has a thing for mixups, doesn't it," she said. "Did you know there's a portal to Rio in one of the lockers?"

She'd noticed the bow strap, yes. She was trying not to comment on it because just the thought made her fingers itch, and wasn't the whole idea of disbanding the team to avoid things that made her fingers itch? ...that line of reasoning would last for maybe another minute.

"There was even a class found! I'm two for two. If we're not counting the thing with the locker. Which I'm not."

Well, that left Isabelle, and she'd have to start dating a whole lot more vampires for that to work.

"I... did not know that, no," Alec said slowly. "Good job managing that? I have a map that I meant to give you on Saturday, actually; I'll find it again and bring it to you later. Maybe you could avoid the whole... locker area, just to be safe."

It was a wise call.

"...Also, the library can get a little dangerous too."

Well, she'd have to see the vampires first...

Kate wrinkled her nose and eyed his bowstrap again. "Is that what the bow's for?"

Oops, she wasn't commenting on that. Wait...the library?

"Wh- oh." One day he'd learn not to just openly carry his bow around. Maybe even get a bag. "No, I just came from the range. Practicing. Nothing actually dangerous."

That was probably reassuring, right?

"The library is more of a... 'don't ask to see Special Collections' type of thing. I think the main area is mostly okay."

If he hung around Kate enough, she'd probably just get him a case because 'you don't treat your weapons like that, young man.' But then Kate tended to think problems often could be solved by brute application of cash.

"That probably wasn't the cue to wonder why we can't see Special Collections, right?" she said, a tiny bit ruefully. Seriously, it's a library, but now it sounded so interesting.

And speaking of interesting, dangerous things were interesting. "What are you practicing for?" she asked, tilting her head a little to try to see the whole bow and what kind was it and was this a 'I do target practice' thing or something real? Kate gave in. "What kind of bow is it?"

It was a fairly good strategy for problem-solving, all things considered.

"No, no, you can ask," Alec assured her. "It's sort of like the locker portal, though. When I was in there, it was a forest full of geographically-improbable birds, and apparently that was a tame day, so they're... strict about it, I guess."

He didn't really get this school. Like at all.

"Oh, it's a recurve," he added, gently swinging the bow off his shoulder to show her. "I just... tend to need to do a lot of archery when I'm at home and there's a whole training regimen that comes with it." That was super vague, yes. "Are you an archer?"

Training regimen. Need to do archery. Pretty built & also good looking (bad, sibling, bad). Carrying around weapons like it was no thing.

Kate put these factors together and came up with a solution. "Are you a superhero?"

Because it'd be pretty much the end if the school had randomly decided to assign her a superhero as her 'big sibling.'

Thoughts of spandex couldn't contain the bow dorkitude for long - because that was a beautiful bow. But it would contain it for the moment.

That was not a question Alec had ever been asked before, but he had to admit it was all kinds of cool for someone to assume that about him. "Not technically," he said, a little sheepishly. "I fight demons, though? It's sort of -- my world's version of that. In a very unpublicized way."

Okay, Alec. Okay.

"Which sort of brings me to-- do you know about different dimensions and everything?"

What even was that segue, Alec?

"So no spandex and interviews on Oprah?" Kate asked, oh so dry again. Not that she'd ever been interviewed on Oprah thankfully. "I didn't know demons could be taken out with arrows. I mean, most things will die if you put an arrow in its eye socket, but..."

It was not a segue at all actually, but it caught her attention away from thinking about fighting demons. "I know about different timelines and people from the future affecting the past and all that."

She usually called the result of that "Mr. Lang."

"Joints, too," Alec agreed. "But essentially, yes."

Shush, not everyone could be cool like Clint and Kate and hit the eye every time.

"Well, basically, most of the people here are from different dimensions," he said. "You might run into people who you recognize or who recognize you but are from a different point in the timeline, too. So my world has demons, yours has... spandex, I guess, one of the teachers comes from some kind of pony land... it's just something to keep in mind."

There, spiel done. Now they could get back to talking about arrows, right?

So much spandex, Alec. Hundreds and hundreds of yards of spandex. (Not usually around the same person)

"So it's like a Model UN only from all different worlds?" Kate considered that then nodded. "You think all the different worlds have archery? Maybe not the pony world, they don't have fingers."

She was taking that pretty easily. It might've been a general 'coming from Marvel' and it might've been the 'portal to Rio.'
