I accidentally spent about seven hours outside today. It was pretty great ( Read more... )

That "grouchy old man" is most likely Larry, one of the owners of Bakerview Nursery. The best thing is to grouch right back at him, or ask him to give you a different person to deal with. He knows he is difficult to deal with.

My favorite gardeners there are the pond gardeners!

Larry made me feel shitty enough that I don't really want to give him any more money unless I have to.

I completely understand and agree, however they are the largest and most well stocked of the nurseries in town. I try to avoid Larry at all costs.

Sounds like a good day.

"I didn't really build raised beds so much as mound them up." Good, I never build beds either, doing so just gives the slugs somewhere to hide.

At least the Dr. Earth Fertilizers are good, albeit expensive but for some reason, they don't carry greensand.

What do you use to fertilize?

I bet your yard would catch my eye even if I didn't know you. I love people who make do with what they have ( ... )

Last year I planted the dill with the corn and it did great! I read that they were companions in one of grandma's booklets. This is also why I threw the cilantro in with the beans. (I had other cilantro in my herb garden on the side yard, but slugs mowed it down. Nothing else in there, just the cilantro ( ... )

Ugh, slugs. I battled with them so much over the past few years and watched them slowly building up a population. This year, I dished out the $10 for a container of Sluggo. Best purchase ever! My garden is practically slug free and I have almost no slug damage at all. It is amazing! I give up with traditional organic methods in the PNW. We just have too many slugs for manual methods. Sluggo is considered organic/non-toxic and is safe for use around humans, pets and on food crops ( ... )

I bought some Sluggo on Friday afternoon, was gonna ask you if you'd had experience with it!

Slugs have been happily eating my broccoli, kale, lettuce and artichoke. I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore! Glad to know it's a good product.

I abused my pumpkin seedlings, too. I'll get some milk jugs for those as well.

I'm trying to fill in a patio type area in the back yard with woolly thyme for a ground cover. At Home Despot, a 4-pack was $2.99, grown in town. At Garden Spot, a single plant was $2.99.

Oh thanks for reminding me I think I have a box of that also and was trying to figure out what to fertilize with. The girls really want me to buy these red trays that wrap around the bottom base of the tomatos to see if it really helps them grow better by reflecting the light some how back up at the fruit?

The trays might do the trick, heck at this point I'll try anything!

Phil put "tomato bags" over his tomatoes and stakes and his are over two feet tall now. He's growing Stupice, which is a hungarian heirloom tomato, I believe.
