Certain death?

Okay, for once even I am fed up with the hurricane hype.

I checked the news this morning and immediately saw "Weather Service Warns of Certain Death in Face of Ike."

Of course, I'm thinking, "Oh man, did it strengthen again? What is it--a four, a five?"
It's a category two with 110 mph winds.

I've always believed the following:

Tropical Storm = Bring the kids in
cat 1 = carry on as usual for a rainy day.
cat 2 = hurricane party.
cat 3 = no hurricane party.
cat 4 = consider evacuation demands.
cat 5 only hits the gulf, florida and other areas of the world that God hates so as a North Carolinian I have little to worry about.

I lived on the coastal plains (about 2 hrs from the coast...if even) for both Fran and Floyed. Our little city/town was flooded beyond belief...no one went anywhere for those and only the stupid died.

Yeah, i was in Rocky Mount/Tarboro for both Fran and Floyd. They were the first times i ever figured out that caskets float when there's too much ground water coming up.

There was also the old terrytown mall in RM...which was flooding to the point you could only see the roof of the building. they didn't even bother rebuilding it. it's a parking lot now, I think?

Not heavy enough. that's funny.
Cars aren't heavy enough for some of these storms.

Dennis wasn't too bad.
My first experience was the remains of Hugo that brushed into NC.

See, that's what's so weird about hurricanes. Both Fran and Floyd did little damage here. Little Dennis though, the second time he hit, caused major flooding.
If I'm correct, they didn't even have time to evacuate Tarboro etc. fully before the storm surge, right? No one expected major flooding that far west.
I ask because Ike is reminding me a lot of a much bigger Floyd. From what I've seen, by the time a lot of people realized that it wasn't a normal category 2 and they needed to leave, the storm surge had already cut off all the roadways were impassible.

**They were the first times i ever figured out that caskets float when there's too much ground water coming up.Man, I DEFINITELY remember that. I knew that they would float in floods and that was why everyone in New Orleans was "buried" above ground...but seeing it happen, even in pictures, was a whole different thing ( ... )
