Hugos, step 1!

Feb 05, 2018 23:42

Guys, guys, I'm so excited, I got my Hugo nominations ballot! (It's my first time doing Worldcon, or Hugos at all -- I'd never done a supporting membership before -- so this is all new and exciting to me and I want to Participate Fully in the Process and all that good stuff :P ( Read more... )

plan to read, note to self, worldcon

Ooooh this is a really good idea that I'm going to co-opt by leaving my notes-to-self in too. :D

(Also I admit that I am sadly terrible at paying attention to / nominating literally anything other than Best Novel, so perhaps this will help me step up my game XD)

Best Novel:
- YES to Raven Stratagem and Provenance (which I'm still only halfway through but I've got a month, right? XD) and I'll be nominating The Stone Sky even if you don't get around to it by then. :D Additional excuse to lure you into reading it this summer if it makes it onto the final list y/y?- I'll probably go ahead and throw a nomination at Harbors of the Sun too (last Raksura novel) - it didn't hit me quite as strongly as some of her other books and none of the others have come anywhere near the final nominations list, but whatever I liked it. :D ( ... )

Since I'm not sure/doubt I'll continue with supporting memberships after this, I want to live this experience fully, LOL, so I've made it one of my fannish goals for the year to nominate in at least 3 categories. Which series now joining the regular roster and YA being a thing for this year makes considerably easier than I thought, so I'm bumping my stretch goal up to five :)

Additional excuse to lure you into reading it this summer if it makes it onto the final list y/y? Yes! I haven't quite committed to reading all the nominated novels -- partly out of the fear that Wristbreaker might make it on there, LOL, or KSR's New York 2140 -- but I definitely plan to read any Hugo nominated novels want to read at some point before voting is over. And I'm pretty sure Stone Sky will at least make the short list (although tbh I'd find it boring if Broken Earth just won three years in a row, as impressive as I think it is ( ... )

I will at the very least be cheering you on. :D And I guess I've called out at least a couple things from five categories above, so maybe I'll manage at least partial nominations in five categories, myself. :D

or KSR's New York 2140

Ahahahahaha there are several novels I've already read that I hope to see on the list but that is ... not one of them. XD You have my considered opinion as someone who has slogged through it that it's, IMO, not worth it. :D

(although tbh I'd find it boring if Broken Earth just won three years in a row, as impressive as I think it is)

Nod. I definitely want to see it nominated, but I'd be just as happy if something else won, too -- and I suspect we're not alone in feeling that way.

(Assuming there are at least some other worthy candidates, but hopefully that won't be a problem. XD)

... I think of my candidates so far, I'm hoping most for Raven Stratagem -- I was kind of bummed that Ninefox didn't end up winning last year.

and suspect other people ( ... )

I don't know that I'll manage 5 full nominations everywhere -- probably just for novel and series -- but I feel like if I can put down at least 3, that counts towards my goal.

I'm definitely rooting for Raven Stratagem, and had been hoping for Ninefox to win last year (again, because I'd rather vote for cool brand new stuff over an impressive sequel to the book that won a Hugo last year. Spread the joy!)

... There's also some Russian in a few places that's badly enough pronounced that even I could tell. XD

Oh, yay, further enticement :P

Oh, but I did remember about another 2017 movie that I have already watched and enjoyed -- LoganBTW, for novelette, I've now read the Ursula Vernon one linked above ("Dark Birds") and that's definitely going on my ballot. I mean, I'm generally a fan of her work, but of all the ones linked on the Wiki this both kept me reading and had me actually liking the story. (I finished another one, the superheroes one, but it just kind of read like a grimdark Not Your Villain, tbh... XD ( ... )

I don't read things that are current enough to meaningfully contribute but I know I am looking forward to following your process. Especially once there are nominations and you will get a packet of readings.

Ha, well, I'm sure I'll share a lot of my process on here :P

(One of my DW flisters did posts where she recorded her thoughts on each category as part of the voting/ranking process, which I found really interesting to read, and can see also being helpful for me in making up my mind, so I will probably do that.)

Heh, same here. I kind of tend to rely on awards to inspire me for reading? XD

I do, too -- often as a second or third order thing -- my friends read the awards list, I read stuff that looks interesting based on their recs (although I did manage to read both Ancillary Justice and Fifth Season before they won their Hugos -- although I think I heard abut the latter after it made the short list, and maybe the former, too.)

So it's interesting to be in a situation that reverses that. I feel this whole weight of responsibility :P

For Best Novel:
- Ruin of Angels by Max Gladstone (no idea why it's not listed in the Wiki)
- An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
- Barbary Station by R.E. Stearns
- ETA: A Tyranny of Queens by Foz Meadows

I don't think I have anything to add in the other categories, either because I don't know them well enough or because anything I'd know would end up being so niche that it wouldn't really matter.

I’ve seen River Solomon’s name on the Campbell list - I may at least try to get a feel for her writing.

Barbary Station sounds a lot like fun, so I’m keeping it in mind, though I’m not going to try to read novels just for the noms (I may or may not try to read all the short listed novels, depends what they are).

But I should definitely try to finish Ruin of Angels in time to nominate it in good conscience!

Oh and niche is fine in the other categories if I have an easy way of getting to it and evaluating for myself. There is going to be some pretty niche stuff on my list I suspect

Be aware that Barbary Station is hard sci-fi, which wasn't the impression I got from the summary. But I can see you liking it.

For Best Fan Artist: Laya, for her underrated wlw book series, among other things.

Not the impression I got either! It sounded space=opera-y to me based on what I've heard. But I'm fine with hard sci-fi if there are also well-written characters I care about, so hopefully it will still be a good fit.

Laya, for her underrated wlw book series, among other things.

Oh wow, these are great! Thank you for linking me to her art -- I really love the diversity of body types and skin tones and hair and everything. Most of the characters are not ones I know, but I was able to fully appreciate Cas & Swift from TASU. And it's a good idea for a series. Anyway, I'm happy to put in a nom for her.

It's so cool that you're involved with the Hugos! I didn't even know that ordinary citizens *could* be involved with them. Have you made more progress on your decisions at this point?

I didn't realize this until a couple of years back, but the Hugos voting is ALL "ordinary citizens" -- well, anybody willing to pay $50 annual membership fees in the Science Fiction Writers Association, which is specifically for fans as well as pros.

This is just the nominations period, so I could have up to 5 things in each category. I've thought of a few more I want to nominate, and made a mental note of a couple more things that are eligible and which I want to finish reading in the next month or so to see if I want to add them to the list.

Then the actual ranked voting period is April till... IDK, July, I think, and at that point I'll concentrate on reading/watching as many of the short-listed works as I can to rank them accordingly.

The Hugos and the open membership are the World Science Fiction Society, not SFWA.

Right! I was reading something on the Nebula nominations, and got my acronyms messed up. I just need to remember the world = Worldcon = Hugos part straight, I guess... but it doesn't help that the other thing has a W in it also!
