I still remember that S1 episode where the family had hardly reunited and Sam and John started going at it again, and Dean just looked so trapped.

Yes. And like Dean had been kind of idealizing what having all three of them together again would be like--and the ideal fell apart.

Back in the day I would have killed killed for the scene when Sam broke that news on the show.

Oh, me too. We know what the aftermath of that was-- with "If you leave, don't come back!" and the terrible estrangement.

But given who he is, Sam would have to leave.

I just so miss the early seasons and that sharp distinction of the characters. The family drama of those divergent personalities was so rich, all by itself!

Wow, that last line is like a shot to the heart. I never thought about Dean seeing the letter as just an offer. This is very intense and heart breaking and I love when 100 words pack such an emotional punch!

That prompt fit that moment so well-- I could just see Dean standing there and knowing that his whole world was unraveling. It would never be quite as bad for John OR Sam as it was for him.

Hard as the rift between Sam and John was, I think it hurt Dean most off all. He was never able to put his family back together again, but it never stopped him from wanting it. :(

That broken triangle was really destined never to be repaired, and I think Dean had a sense of the hopelessness of it all even back then.
