Hamburger, hotdog?

Jun 15, 2018 09:41

So I'm reading something about how Graham Norton would rather live alone rather than with someone who folds towels the wrong way (which I totally get, btw), and in the comments on the ONTD page, a couple of people mention folding towels by "hamburger" and "hotdog ( Read more... )

I SAW THAT AND I HAVE NO IDEA EITHER AND I AM AMERICAN. As far as the hot dog part goes, I almost wonder if they mean roll it up? But other than that, I'm lost ( ... )

Oh, okay! So maybe it's regional? Weird, anyway. Maybe someone else will know ( ... )

Hopefully someone can explain it!

That and we Americans tend to forget that we're not the only ones on the planet. Hahaha.

They are and if you haven't grown up speaking it, it won't ever sound 'right'. My German teacher in high school used to love teasing us about our 'American accents' when we'd speak in her language. I agree with you on the last part - my husband likes to watch Top Gear and listening to the way they pronounce things as common as Nissan is amusing. Like if you can understand me enough to correct me then I obviously made my point! LOL

Ah, that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. Makes it nice for them right after Christmas though to have that time off. That would be so nice to have everyone on the same schedule!

Same here. Not much actually interests me but sometimes I see something and am dumb enough to go in and read the comments. I don't belong either and don't always want to!

Just quick, it's something that my sister's kids learned and I thought was very bizarre.

If you have a letter sized paper and fold it top to bottom it is hamburger (fat), side to side is hot dog (long). To my knowledge it is fat versus long.

AH!!! Now I get it. THANK YOU! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

PS: this is the closest icon I have to a hot dog... I think.

Okay, so now that there's a minute, I can tell you that the first time I heard my niece say "Fold it like a hamburger" I thought she had hit her head. You don't fold hamburgers, WTF?! This is NOT something I learned in school. But I did confirm with my assistant that she did learn this in school. It seems ridiculous to me, but they swear to me it makes sense to them.

*headdesk*

Yeah, it just didn't compute when I read it at first, but your explanation made enough sense that I got it, whether it's a common expression or not. It still seems a weird way to explain something that is essentially explainable as 'width-way' and 'length-way, but at least I can understand it now!

Don't you know the world revolves around the USA? /sarcasm. It's so funny to read about NZ schooling because I find it so confusing, but that just made me realize how confusing US schooling must be to other people who don't live here! You're so right!

HAHA! That is how it feels sometimes, but I know it's not intentional for the most part (except for certain exemptions!).

Yeah, everything I know about schooling in America I learned from movies and TV, so at least we have that; you won't have much Kiwi TV/movies that can explain ours to you! I guess the main thing that will seem weird is that because our seasons are opposite, our school year actually runs from February to December, like a calendar year (almost, except that January is pretty much always in summer holidays), and the summer holidays/Christmas holidays are at the same time!

Oh man I would hate having Christmas over summer break. You're cheated out of extra days off! /really-late-reply

I guess you don't know any different when it's what you've always had! But having said that, we get other holidays that you may not, like Easter, Queens Birthday, ANZAC Day and Waitangi Day. We also don't get some of your holidays like American Independence and such, so I guess it's swings and roundabouts (if you even have that saying!).

I actually love having Christmas and summer holidays around the same time; it's really different from the winter Christmas, but it's such a fun time of year and everything seems so much easier in the good weather leading up to Christmas, especially when that time of year can be so busy! And then, after Christmas, things slow down and you can relax in the heat!

Don't worry about the late reply - I'm not much better a lot of times.
