Hahahaaaa this post made me realize I haven't read anything that was published this year. That can't be true, can it? I SUCK. No, wait, I'm just retro, that's all.

Retro! Or, also, NORMAL. It is only becuz it is my job that I am hyper-aware of year of publication. For rills.

Do graphic novels count? If so two completely different styles, but both brilliant in their own ways are Exit Wounds by Rutu Modan which is set in Isreal and tells a story of both love anda search for identity; and Alice in Sunderland by Bryan Talbot, which is basically a history of the city of Sunderland but told in a unique way. Of course they count! :) Alice in Sunderland is on my list of things to get my hands on, and one of my plans is to read/review the three volumes of DMZ so far, which should be neat ... Exit Wounds also sounds familiar, and I shall have to figure out why.

DMZ is very good, I've been getting the singles and it builds up to a very interesting story. I suggests an America which could really happen in the future whilst also dissecting the Iraq war.

Another trade you should look out for is Phonogram as it will feed your Britpop hunger, and also when Local is put together that will also be worth picking up. Sxx

Oooh! That first one looks particularly interesting ... will have to see if I can get my hot little hands on it. Thanks for the suggestions, and do tell me how they are! :)

Do works of fiction written this year by men count? One from three ain't so bad!

"Steep Approach to Garbadale" - Iain Banks

I haven't read much this year. Though as cool books go "Shape of things to come" by HG Wells was rather interesting. 1933 isn't quite this year though and as far as I know HG Wells was a man.

Oooh hey, I've got that one, the Banks, and I keep forgetting I've got it. It needs to get added to the list right quick. Thanks for reminding me.

No probs. I think it is actually one of his better recent works. He has been through a bit of a slump lately, with some of his writing coming across as angry rants against Bush, America, the war and the like. I think the break up with his wife didn't help either. Hopefully he has got it out of his system and we can look forward to his new SF book due next year called "Matter".

Wow. You are far better informed than I about the state of Banks! But that almost makes his recent stuff sound all the more interesting. I've only read a handful of his books, and none of the Culture ones, but I've got this huge pile of them looking at me, wondering when they're going to be read.
