OK, in an effort to hold myself to doing something, I am going to publicly declare my intention to write a much-expanded examination of what happened with Eustace and Jill and The Last Battle in the comment-fic-derived AU now being tracked at
last_battle_au. Because it seemed to really strike a chord with a lot of people, and it's what suddenly pulled together everything for that peyote vision fic. And there's definitely a story both in the "what exactly did they see" and "what did the aftermath look like when they got back to England".
But there's one aspect that I keep kicking back and forth and wouldn't mind some suggestions or rambling thoughts or whatever. And that's "what exactly did they see?"
When I first decided that TLB really did more-or-less happen except for the train wreck, I figured that in the last actual battle, where Eustace and Jill get backed into the stable, instead of ending up in Aslan's country and watching him End Narnia, they were dumped back into our world. They would have arrived with either a very strong suspicion or even an absolute but unexplainable certainty that Narnia was over.
Then I decided that Aslan at least spoke to them during that journey, explaining that they had not been expected to prevent this. Because otherwise it's cruel, and I don't want to write about them *knowing* that they failed (they may have doubts, but I want them to know from Aslan that he does not think they failed).
And then it fit the symmetry of Polly and Digory seeing the dawn song for Eustace and Jill to see the song of nightfall. So instead they basically had a very similar scene to TLB, except without the other Friends of Narnia. I *think* that's what I'm going to work with, but I'm curious to see if anyone has any comments on the options, or preferences for one or the other.
