Office of Nick Bartamian, Private Dick, The Arms Hotel Room 315, Saturday Afternoon

Jul 12, 2014 13:03

There was something to be said, Nick noted as he flipped through his notes on the case he'd been trying to get to the bottom of for the past several months, for criminals who left a neat and tidy paper trail for him to follow. They made his job so damn much easier, after all. Unfortunately for Nick, known as The Gorgon to anyone who had the ( Read more... )

And maybe, just maybe, this time the heavens had listened to Nick's woes. Now that he was on the side of the angels, they decided to grease the wheels a little. Because just as he was thinking about a new case to solve, there was a hesitant knock on his door.

In the doorway stood a dame. No, not a dame. A lady. She looked young and unsure of herself, standing at his threshold like she wasn't entirely sure she was supposed to be there.

"Excuse me?" she said, and her voice was soft. Low. Far too sweet for a place like Fandom. "Are you Mr. Bartamian?"

Nick glanced up from his notes at the fresh little dish standing in his doorway, taking in he sight of her with a long, thoughtful look up and down.

If she hadn't said his name, he'd swear the girl was lost.

"That is the name on the door," he noted at length, waving her into the room. "There something I can help you with, Miss...?"

"Li," the girl said as she entered his office. She kept the door to the hallway open. "Miss Katherine Li. I--I'm here to hire you. For a case. That is, if you handle missing persons."

"I'll handle damn near any case, so long as you can pay," Nick replied, gesturing to one of the chairs across from his desk. "You lose somebody you want me to find?"

At this point, the girl could be missing a pet cat and he'd take the case. Not that he was desperate, really. He was just well aware that a PI didn't get a hell of a lot done without a roof over his head.

The people who really know what's going on are fellow shamuses. I don't like to talk down my profession, but some of them can be the fuzzy end of the lollipop on a sticky day. I'd heard decent things about this guy Nick, though, and I needed the scoop on Fandom. Fast.

"Nick Bartamian?" Dinah stopped, one hand poised to knock on the open door. Hat tilted to throw an angle over her face, but the silhouette showing off her curves. And the curves of her .45.

There were some curves that Nick could appreciate more than others. He took a moment to appreciate the first set, and another moment to make certain that his own heat was within easy reach, if it came to that.

"The one and only," he answered easily, a lit cigarette resting on his bottom lip. "You need something, doll?"

Dinah sashayed in and hitched a hip up to the edge of his desk, then pulled out her I.D. "Dinah Lance. P.I. out of New Gotham. I'm looking for info, and I heard you were an honest Joe. Got a minute for a gumshoe in need?"

"I've got two or three, if it comes to that," Nick replied, nodding as he gave that I.D. a thorough looking over. He saw enough trouble types on a daily basis, he was hardly going to take anyone with a gun like that at their word without a healthy dose of skepticism thrown in for good measure. "What sort of info are you in the market for tonight, pray tell?"
