Yep, definite progress has been made here. Still, the NY courts have made it clear that the legislature has to act for anything to happen here. The Governor is strongly behind it, the State Assembly has already passed a similar bill, and would be happy to do it again. Unfortunately, the State Senate, while recently wrested from the Republicans, is still not solid enough on enacting same-sex marriage for us to be able to count on anything happening this year.
So, those of you who live in New York, especially if you have a more conservative Democrat as your State Senator, make sure to write your State Senator early and often to express your strong support for this issue. Get your friends and neighbors to join in.

Yeah, I remember posting about the state senate Democrats' renegging on bringing up the issue even though they made it a campaign promise. It wasn't clear if there were enough votes, and that may still be the case. But at least fulfill the campaign promise and put the effort in. So I'm pleased that they are.
The problem is the NYS Republican Party acts as if it's pledged to oppose same-sex marriage (even though the party platform claims to leave room for dissent on that issue), and some key Democrats (especially from immigrant-heavy neighborhoods in NYC) take a very negative view of LGBTQ rights in general and same-sex marriage in particular. These two blocks add up to the majority of the State Senate, so, unless there's a lot of pressure on the Senate, this bill will fail there.
So let's get some pressure on the Senate, New Yorkers :-) Check out this rough list here (note, list is from 2006, your current Senator may vary), if your Senator doesn't have a position yet, help him form one :-)
