A Boy the Bullies Love to Beat Up, Repeatedly

Mar 24, 2008 13:49

An Arkansan teenage boy's store was chronicled on the front page of the New York Times. He's been mercilessly bullied. The kid maintains he's straight but gay-bashing is known in the same school district, and it started after he was asked if he wanted a "certain sex toy" in a prank phone call. He's also been called "a homosexual" on a Facebook hate ( Read more... )

There are two sides to every story. If his side is true, then I feel bad for him.

The official side to the story does seem pretty lame. The statement boils down to a bunch of bureaucratese about how procedures are in place and we value the safety of every student etc etc.

I don't even understand this nonsense! This is the same high school that that idiot Fred Phelps & his church-folks came & protested at a few years ago b/c they have a GSA group at their school that has a LARGE membership.
WTF, Fayetteville?!?!?! I thought the high school was more tolerant than this. This is bullshit. I'd have started suing Fayetteville School District a LONG time ago.
I see where the parents are coming from, I just hope their son is okay with all of what they're doing (as in, he may prefer to just move but his parents want to take care of it in this way).

Ironically, the Fayetteville School District is doing a survey on their website right now about the level of satisfaction parents have with it. LOL!!!

I'm already having problems with them, so they're not gonna get a very good response from me anyway, but now even more so!

The superintendent is leaving as well... they don't have another one lined up yet, either! Gee, I wonder why they're having problems???

Jamie, I think you know how I feel about bullying, and why. Let me put it in the strongest possible terms: this sort of thing makes me very fucking angry. I strongly believe in "turning the other cheek" and forgiveness, but stuff like this really tempts me to scream out for Old Testament-style vengeance.

I saw that on the Arkansas Blog this morning. I was surprised it could happen in Fayetteville, of all places. Such a liberal, open town.

It's still the south, and even liberal areas have homophobes.

But yeah, it seems less likely to happen in F'Ville than, say, Walnut Ridge.
