Bleh. If fans want to root for a hot, well-groomed guy, they can wait for the second movie and root for Finnick. Or if their definition of "well-groomed" stretches far enough to include "a bit scruffy, but at least his hair's not dodgy," they can go ahead and root for Gale right now or even console themselves with the knowledge that Haymitch is supposed to be good-looking in flashbacks. It's not as if this series has a shortage of guys who clean up well. But Haymitch during Katniss's time is a middle-aged alcoholic ravaged by self-loathing and survivor's guilt, and now that the people who could have been held as hostages for his camera-friendly behavior are all dead, the last thing he wants is to look nice for the ghouls in the Capitol.
Isn't it a scary thought that most folk would rather have an attractive hero than think about why a character would look a certain way? (Unless it's a character of color or something. Then it's a question of why can't they be white?)
Or shock and outrage at learning that the character was never described as or intended to be perceived as white, followed by amazingly racist blustering about how the actor is too dark to look cute, sweet, innocent, handsome, calm, nurturing, or gay. All the Rue bullshit and a lot of the Cinna bullshit are even grosser than the Blaise Zabini bullshit. That's why I'm clinging to the dodgy hair comment, as shallow as it is-- at least it's about a white man's slightly wavy blond hair, so it's not racist shallowness.
