I liked the first Birchbark book and should read the others. Have you read The Saturdays, by Elizabeth Enright? It was written in the 1940s so it's not a socially conscious book, but it's charming.

I liked the first three Birchbark books, with Omakayas as the main character, better than the last two about her sons-- but each of them did win me over by the end. I wonder if there will be more.

Yes, I love The Saturdays and the rest of the Melendys books! I think Rush was my favorite because I played the piano and wanted to be talented like him... but there are so many great little details as they all wander around New York. Rush at the opera, Mona and her shocking painted fingernails, the Pig If Necessary, Isaac saving them from coal gas, putting on a show! <3

I thought I'd read a lot of children's lit but had never heard of these until recently. I'm on the Four Story Mistake now. One of the best titles ever! You have a very good memory. :-)
