That's When

Addison tries not to get mad when it happens. She arrives home, kisses their kids goodnight and crawls into bed after paying the babysitter, who looks at her with sad eyes like at twenty she’s sure her current boyfriend will never stand her up. Addison lies on her back and stares up at the ceiling while she plays with the ends of her perfectly curled hair. She hears the front door open and shut half an hour later and turns on to her side, closing her eyes and hoping that by pretending to be asleep she can just keep pretending that she doesn’t care. But when she hears him come in to the room and take a shaky breath she rolls on to her back and looks over at him.

“Mark?” He starts when she says his name and turns to look at her slowly. His face is stained with tears and he looks shaken. “What’s wrong?”

“There was a car accident.” He whispers. “And the driver…she was a tall, beautiful redhead. And Jim wouldn’t let me anywhere near her, and I freaked out. I thought it was you and I spent two hours in the bathroom throwing up because…oh god, if it had been you…” He chokes out a sob and hits his knees on the bedroom floor. Addison scrambles out of bed and pulls him in to her arms, rubbing his back as he shakes and sniffles. “A-and then, when Jim finally thought I was calm enough to be involved, I did a rhinoplasty because I-I wanted her husband to be able to recognize her.” He wraps his arms around Addison and holds her as tight as he possibly can. “I-I’m s-s-sorry Addie. I d-didn’t mean to leave you sitting there.”

“It’s okay.” She whispers, rubbing his back and kissing the top of his head. “This is one of the reasons I love you, Mark.”

“Y-you love me because I stood you up?”

Addison laughs softly. “No. Because you stayed and performed a rhinoplasty on a woman because you wanted to make sure her husband recognized her. And I know you did it partly because you would have wanted it done if it was me,” his arms tighten around her as she mentions the possibility of it being her and she smiles, “but you also did it because you didn’t want another man to feel like you did.”

“Y-yeah.” He smiles at her and kisses her nose. “Are you mad?”

“Not anymore.” She says softly. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He takes a shaky breath. “Happy Birthday.”

Mark slams every door he can when they have a fight, because he feels like he’s making more of a point if he’s loud. When the coat closet door slams, Addison remains in her spot in the kitchen and rolls her eyes. The pot of spaghetti sauce is on the floor, probably staining the linoleum, but it’s his stupid apartment and she could care less. They’re moving out soon anyway. She was making him dinner as a surprise, she had been planning on telling him that she’d faxed the divorce papers over to Derek that morning, but then he came home and everything exploded. He’d had a bad day at work, and she had put garlic in the spaghetti sauce, which he’s allergic to, and a whole fight had started, which she was assuming was now finished since he was no longer shouting expletives and slamming unimportant doors and he made his way down the hall. She finally picks up the pot, carefully, and starts to clean up the spaghetti sauce, carefully avoiding getting any on her designer jeans.

Mark settles in the recliner in his office and sighs. He probably shouldn’t have shouted at her like that, but she could have killed him. And there was no reason for her to call him a girl. He might have been overreacting a little, but there was no reason for that. He’s just beginning to dial the number of an old friend, to vent, when there’s a knock at the door. Addison steps inside and leans against his desk, frowning.

“I was going to tell you that I faxed the divorce papers.” She says softly, peering down at him.

“Oh. Good.” He clears his throat, unable to think of anything else to say.

“Sorry I put garlic in the sauce. I forgot.”

He shrugs, leaning forward and tugging on her pant leg until she settles in to his lap. “It’s alright. I shouldn’t have exploded on you like that.”

She smirks and kisses his nose. “I love you.”

He laughs softly. “Why?”

“Because you’re totally a girl.” Mark grunts out a response and tosses her on to the floor, pouncing on top of her as she squeals with delight and their night ends in a completely different way than it started.

At their wedding reception, a small and intimate gathering in the backyard of their new home, Mark watches her with a kind of love Derek Shepherd has never seen before. He can’t even remember watching Addison like that, and while that saddens him a little, it makes him a little happier for them both. Because, while he didn’t want them getting together the way that they did; he only ever wanted the two of them to be happy. When Savvy begins to toast them a few minutes later, Derek is still scrambling for words to be said, and when she gestures to him for his turn, he shakily stands and turns to face them.

“So I didn’t prepare this.” He starts, turning red. “And I think that might have been because I was still hoping that this was all a freakish dream, but I guess since it’s not…”

Addison sighs. “That was a wonderful start, Derek.”

The crowd laughs and he smirks at her. “I thought you would like that.” He winks at her and turns back to the crowd. “Who could imagine a better couple, huh? They’re my two best friends, and surprisingly, they’re perfect for each other.” He sighs. “He’s loved her forever, and he still loves her, despite her bossiness and all that comes with being a redhead.”

“I like the bossing,” Mark says, grinning as Derek glares at him for interrupting. “More bossing.” He laughs, turning to Addison, who smacks him in the arm.

“And she loves him despite his dirty jokes, his bathroom humor and the fact that he has two left feet more often than not.” The crowd laughs again and Mark turns red, burying his face in Addison’s hair. “There isn’t much else to say for them. You’ve never seen a couple more perfect than this, and trust me, I would know.”

Savvy stands and raises her glass. “To Addison and Mark.”

“To Addison and Mark.”
