I boycotted the Oscars last night for reasons that had nothing whatsoever to do with Seth MacFarlane, whom I have always loathed. The man is the walking, breathing, yammering archetypal fucking douchebag. Truthfully, I had no idea he was hosting until last night. Then, this morning I began hearing of the sexist, racist, homophobic bullshit that Read more... )

MacFarlane is an utter arsewipe. I agree with what you said about Lana Wachowski - gods know what bullshit he might've spouted at her. (Finally, finally we get CLOUD ATLAS over here! I need to find someone to go with me.)

Fascinating to see how Dancy's look has evolved!

While a lot of blame can be laid on MacFarlane, an additional load of blame needs to be put on the Academy itself. MacFarlane is inexplicably one of the highest paid people in Hollywood so they can't plead ignorance that they didn't know what his schtick was like. And even sadder, it took a team of douchebags to write the show. So sadly, it was everyone involved, not just the emcee, being douchebags.

But hey, gotta get that 18-24 white male demographic, I suppose. Lord knows they are sooooo neglected in the entertainment industry.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years, because the mostly white male academy is not representative of what I want to see in film. But I can't for the life of me figure out why they continue to pick such horrible hosts - we do notice and it reinforces our decision not to watch.

Argh, someone on Metafilter pointed out that the majority of scenes for which that whole "boobs" musical number were scenes in which the female character was being victimized or in some instances, raped.

What. The. Fuck.

I didn't watch, and I kept wishing I still had my copy of Coldheart Canyon so I could open it up to the relevant pages where the main character (and possibly, by extension, Clive Barker) muses about "The Night of Nights, the Show of Shows... the circus..."

I think the first question to spring to mind was "Is Bruce Vilanch no longer the head writer for the Oscars?"

I take some small comfort in how back in 1999, Gods and Monsters won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, had Clive Barker as an executive producer, and starred an actual gay man as a gay man.
