I agree with Frickinmuck on the idea that these large companies rarely use freelancers. After 13 years in the business it took me hiring a sales person/strategist who had an awesome roladex. In the game of big dawgs it is definately who you know.
However, once we landed one and had them in the portfolio, it was easier to cold call the secretary of marketing, befriend her, show our portfolio and have her sympathize with struggeling agencey.
It has taken many years and now I can honestly say working with the big budget, fortune 500 companies is great but it increases the target on your back.
Frickinmuck has the game down, get in with a company (like ours) who holds contracts with FILA, Callaway golf and the NFL :) then your stress level goes down significantly because the team aspect is greater reward while you build your portfolio.
