Ok, so I'm reading along in this "Fortress of Blank" series by C. J. Cherryh. I am enjoying it well enough, though it is not without it's problematic elements. Specifically, those one finds in nearly all "high" fantasy - everybody is white, and there are hardly any women. You are absolutely right about sublimation drying of clothes...but there has to be sunlight for it to work...the brighter the sun the faster the sublimation.

Does the story take place where it's overcast or in an arctic clime during the dark season?

hrm... Ok, I REALLY want to nitpick that* but I do take your point. I wasn't sure if it was cold and sunny or cold and overcast, but it turns out it was cold and overcast. So ok. The clothes would just freeze.

Definitely not a dark season thing, though.

*Ice will still sublimate without any sun. It'll just take an incredibly long time.

Ok...technically true...but I was thinking from a human time frame perspective (us humans are an impatient bunch).
