That was me to my husband after explaining to him that I'd just spent the last 4? 5? 6? Hours up to my eyeballs in technical books & websites and dtrace output because one of our DBAs was about to put his head through a wall in frustration over the miserable performance of one of his shiny, new servers. Aah, but the case! What was the fault, what was the root cause?

The most likely cause? The DBAs being pressured to switch a non-production box from the expensive SAS disk in the SAN to the cheaper SATA disks.

So Tuesday afternoon I moved the ZIL out of the main pool on the SAN to one of the internal disks and doubled the size of the ARC cache. And lo! the system went Zoom! and the DBA is elated. I are teh awsum ;)

For extra points, dump it on SSD and watch it really fly! ZIL slog is pretty good stuff.

One of these days I'm going to subvert a case into a 'I need to use dtrace to fix this' case, just to allow me to play with it :)

You're jealous of me not getting home until after 3am and being effectively brain dead the next day? D00d, you crazy ;)

More seriously, if it's a performance problem on Sol 10 and up, I head for the dtrace books and scripts. Sometimes I even understand the output. Honestly, I don't have much other call for it. (well, there's some ancient code that it might help me fix, but I'd rather forget it exists)
