This is in response to your feminist rage comment. I just wanted to mention that it's ironic you included pictures of Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern, as they are 2 male media figures whose apperances are frequently criticized by a good number of people. I agree with your point that women are the focus but to say it doesn't happen to men at all isn't true, and you proved that in your post.
actually, i'd have to disagree with you completely. some people might criticize rush and howard for their appearance, but these criticisms have no realistic impact on their ability to make it big and be credible and likeable and HEROIC to mainstream america. they would never have to go through diets and plastic surgery to gain any leverage on their careers -- and on top of that, they think they can cap on the way women look, and make a career out of it.
They're radio hosts with pathetic TV shows. Their appearance prevents them from gathering the same audience they have on radio (Rush's show was cancelled very quickly, I believe). And you're forgetting that as lot of male AND female talk show hosts are conventionally unattractive. Star Jones was, Sally Jesse Rapheal, Ricki Lack, Rosie O'Donnel, as well as Letterman and Al Roker, who both get made fun of frequently for their appearance. Also, do women and men take Gary Colman seriously even though he's 4 feet tall? (he's a joke to almost everyone, including a lot of women I know) While they women get flack for being unattractive, so do the men I mentioned, and some of those men have failed in a picture based medium but succeeded in radio while those women haven't. You're ignoring the fact that men and women are frequently judged and frequently judge each other by physical appearance (I study attraction theory, women have it worse but it goes both ways, ask for a citation and I'll provide it
