Chapter 1: His arrival

The plane landed and Yunho finally could stretch his limbs after his eleven hours journey from London to Seoul. He was beyond exhausted because unlike other people, he couldn’t sleep on planes. He would always sit on his seat, read magazines, watch movies, listen to every available album in the entertainment section and try to suppress frustrated sighs from escaping his mouth although some did manage to break out involuntary. But deep inside, he was happy that he was finally home, where his family and friends were and where he belonged.

“Yunho, over here!”

Yunho’s face stretched into a huge grin when he spotted his friend, who he met when he was in London waving his hand and welcoming him in the airport. He pushed his trolley and walked past some of the arrivals to reach his friend.

“Donghae!”

“Welcome home pal”

Yunho hugged Donghae and both of them laughed when Yunho retreated back and raised his hands as if blocking the other from approaching nearer.

“One hug is enough, don’t touch me again.”

“Oh you wish.”

They laughed again and Yunho gave his friend a one arm hug before walking to Donghae’s car.

“Your Mom wanted to come but your neighbor suddenly came crying.”

“Don’t tell me, her husband hit her again” Yunho guessed.

“Hitting a woman, such an asshole. I don’t know why she bears with him.”

“It’s because of her sons. They are still so young. She doesn’t want them to be fatherless.”

“I don’t think I want to live with someone who hit my mother every chance he got. One day I’m gonna kill the asshole.”

“Calm down Hae, don’t get yourself in troubles”

“Easy for you to say. You didn’t see your mother crying every night because your father hit her and you were weak and unable to do anything” Donghae stated.

“He is dead Hae, just forgive him.”

“I can’t. The only memories I have of him is him hitting my mother”

Yunho sighed and looked out of the window of the car. Seoul had changed a lot. The scenery of the Han River at night was breathtaking and he found himself smiling.

“It’s nice to be home”

Donghae smiled and parked the car near the Han River.

“Why did you stop?”

“I thought maybe you wanted to take a look first. It’s been a long time. Come on”

Yunho threw him a grateful look and stepped out of the car, the view of the Han River brought old and pleasant memories of a certain someone.

“You have that look” Donghae stated casually.

“What look?” Yunho tilted his head and looked confusingly at Donghae.

“That longing look”

Yunho sighed and looked at the passersby.

“I missed Seoul, that’s it”

“Aha, so it’s Seoul, not someone” Donghae smirked and nudged Yunho’s side.

“No one. I have no one waiting for me”

“You are leaving me”

“I’m sorry, but I have to do this”

“Call me”

“I will, don’t worry. You are my only best friend, remember”

Jaejoong pouted and lowered his head trying to suppress an embarrassing sob from escaping his mouth.

“I will wait for you” Jaejoong hugged his friend and nodded.

“You sound like my girlfriend” He joked but Jaejoong tightened the hug.

“I love you” Jaejoong whispered just for Yunho to hear.

“I love you too” Yunho laughed.

“What are you laughing at?”

“The girls are glaring at us. They thought that you really love me”

Jaejoong closed his eyes and then opened them and smiled sadly.

“Yeah, go tell them that we are just friends then”

Yunho laughed and hugged him again.

“I will miss you. Take care of yourself ok?”

“I will. Take care of yourself too. You must eat and sleep well. And don’t go out partying a lot. You need to study”

“Ok Mom”

Yunho joked again and ruffled his friend’s hair. He left Jaejoong and went to say goodbye to his classmates who gathered in the airport to bid him goodbye before leaving to study in London.

turned his back on them and walked behind the gateway and disappeared. Whines were heard before all the people who came for him left, except one.

Jaejoong looked with fair and sad eyes as his best friend’s back disappeared behind those gates. A tear slipped from his eye and a feeling of loneliness invaded his whole being. His best friend and the man who happened to capture his heart was gone, and he was left alone, yet again. /em>

Yunho went home after spending a good hour in the Han River with Donghae. Loud screams and roars greeted him once he entered his parent’s house. All his family members and old friends and classmates were there throwing him a surprise welcoming party.

The party went on with people hugging Yunho and expressing how much they missed him. They were impressed that he could remember them all; their names, hobbies, their high school adventure and every memory they talked about. Yunho didn’t tell anyone other than his parents and Jaejoong that he had a photographic memory that allowed him to memorize everything by seeing it once. That included names, situations, lines and books. This gift eased the burden of his studies. He was successful and didn’t need to study often because he was able to recall everything that was said in class and everything that was written in books. Jaejoong was always jealous and called it cheating.

Speaking about Jaejoong, Yunho let his eyes scan the people in the party. He didn’t see Jaejoong among them, and this made him feel bad. He lost contact with Jaejoong once he landed in London. He tried to call Jaejoong’s house but the number was out of reach. He asked his mother but she said that they didn’t see him ever since he left.

He moved between his old friends and asked them about Jaejoong. Most of them didn’t like Jaejoong back in high school, so no one knew anything about him and they were still quite frank about their hate towards the boy who did no harm to them.

Yunho sighed and pushed any thoughts about his long lost best friend to the back of his head and enjoyed the party.

Jaejoong was walking back from the airport when he saw smoke covering his neighborhood. An anguish feeling squeezed his heart and he ran as fast as he could to see where the smoke was coming from.

“Hyung, hyung she is still there”

Junsu threw himself in his older brother’s arms wailing. He shook his shoulders and screamed with all of the fear he had in his heart.

“Who is there? Junsu who is there?”

“Mom, she is stuck in there. You must help her. Save our Mom”

Jaejoong pushed his brother and ran towards the burning building. He tried to get in but the firemen prevent him from getting in. The heat of the fire burned his eyes and hot tears stained his face.

“MOM, she is there. Save her, let me in. LET ME IN”

“We will do our best young man, just step aside and let us do our work”

Jaejoong covered his mouth with his hand and let tears slide down his face. His eyes widened when he couldn’t see his brother beside him.

“Junsu? JUNSU where are you”

He pushed the crowd of people and screamed looking for Junsu.

“Junsu!” He shouted when he spotted him curling on the floor. Jaejoong ran to the figure and hugged him tightly. He wanted to comfort him, to tell him that everything would be fine and that the firemen would save their mother, but the words were stuck in his throat and all he could do was holding his crying brother and cried with him.

He then saw two firemen coming from the burning building carrying a familiar woman. He tugged Junsu’s shirt and they both ran towards the firemen.

“Stay away” the fireman pushed the two boys away.

“Mom? This is my Mom; let me see her, please”

Jaejoong cried and pushed the fireman, trying to reach his mother. Once the woman was in the ambulance the fireman allowed the two boys to pass and run towards the vehicle that carried their mom. They stood looking at the doctors gathered around their mother’s body, trying to revive her breath with different machine and medicine.

They doctor were yelling and like movies, they saw them charging the two devices to shake their mother’s chest. Her body jerked upward once, twice and the third time they heard the beeping sound of the machine telling them that her heart had stopped.

Junsu screamed and buried his head in Jaejoong’s chest crying his heart out while clenching his hands in his brother’s shirt. Jaejoong’s eyes were still attached to his mother’s body and to the doctor covering her face with a white sheet.

She was gone and they were alone. Without a sound he wrapped his arms around his brother’s smaller frame and hugged him tightly, crying silently and wondering what would happened to them after they lost all their parents.
