It gets worse. The sodding Home Office destroyed the landing cards of the Windrush generation, collected when they arrived here 50-60 years ago, despite protests by civil servants who pointed out that it could make it harder to establish the immigration status of that generation

It is un-fucking-believable. That this happened in 2010 - Christ, if it happens in the 60s before digitisation was possible, that's one thing - but that in 2010 it did not occur to the government that there was value in these records, that it maybe wasn't a good idea to destroy these things before they'd been digitised...

Why the hell did the powers that be not digitize these before destroying them? Wow. I hope there are several heads on the chopping block over this.

Because the then new Home Secretary wanted to put out the message that immigrants were unwelcome here. There was a van with a message on the side of it. Note this bit of the Guardian article:
