I am a Shakespeare Geek

Or Nerd. I don't care which you call me. I have received my schedules for the modules I am doing in the Autumn Term. The Institute seems to prefer to cram a module into a number of whole days rather than a regular two-hour seminar slot. This will lead to much intensive (and, I rather expect, exhilarating) work. Beneath the cut I am posting the ( Read more... )

Comedy of Errors medieval? It's the sodding Menaechmae with double twins!

I suspect Hamlet is in because of Cumberbatch btw.

Unlikely - this is very RSC-biased, and they have already had Tennant. It comes just before 12thN chronologically. There's another module which deals with the later plays, sonnets etc.

Yes, C of E is undoubtedly Menaechmi, but I suspect the argument will be that Will the Quill is also using a lot of elements of the Early Modern plays like Mankind, which mixed genres in a way Plautus and Terence would never have dreamt of doing.

I blinked because at first I read C of E as "Church of England." Where buying gold chains for courtesans is frowned on...

I once tried to explain the plot of Cymbeline to someone. I think she was trying to figure out how long it would take to summon the men with the butterfly nets.

There was a Miss Jean Brodie mini-series with Geraldine McEwan, which I would like to see, but it's not on Netflix!

One of my goals for the next 5 years is to read thru all the plays. So yes, add me to the filter!

Current voting suggests I may not need to bother with a filter. And plays really are better seen than read...

I, of course, have now gone off on a Jean Brodie tangent. It was the play performed when I first began attending my middle/high school and the girl who played Jean was just extraordinary.

To me Maggie Smith is the unforgettable Jean.

I got to see Maggie Smith with Joan Plowright in The Way of the World the one and only time I was in London. She is such a magnificent actress!

I'm doing a Shakespeare online thingy in October with the OU. Haven't studied it in years but really looking forward to it :) might be asking the odd question of the expert, now I know where to find her!

The classes look so lovely, I wish I could take them.

When I did a semester abroad in London in university, I had a Shakespeare class. We read the plays that we could watch performed in London theater in 2000 season. This included very weird off West End Hamlet and the best Midsummer Nights Dream I ever seen at the National Theater.
