Summary: Two women with difficult jobs take solace in each other.
It wasn't a cop bar; she got more than enough of that during the day. She didn't want to drink in a dive, though, and there was a thin line between cop bars and bars that would kick her out the second they smelled the badge on her. She managed to find a decent enough place a few blocks away from the precinct, just a bit out of her way home. It was called Pearl's, a quiet place for professionals to gather and unwind after a busy day.
Kate let the tension flow from her shoulders before she went inside, hoping to blend in with the civilian population. In her jeans and leather jacket, she hoped she was just close enough to pass. It was dark enough outside and dimly-lit enough inside that she didn't need to let her eyes adjust to the darkness. The bar was half full, or half empty depending on your state of mind, and Kate moved toward the bar and motioned for a drink. The woman behind the counter knew her, knew her usual, and nodded that she would bring it in a second.
Leaning one arm against the bar, Kate closed her eyes and let the real world soak in. Just people getting a drink. No suspects, no murderers, no victims with their sad eyes looking to her for answers. Just a dozen or so other souls looking for a little something to ease the transition into night. She was one of them now; she held no authority and no suspicion. She was Kate, not Beckett or Detective, and she treasured the moment she got to go back to herself.
When her drink arrived, she took it to a back booth. She settled in, and took a long draught of her beer.
She was halfway done with the drink when the door opened again, and Olivia came into the bar. Kate tried not to look too eager, didn't want to give Olivia even more of a hold over her. If Olivia knew that Kate had been staring at the door since the moment she sat down, they wouldn't be equals anymore. And that was a big part of the thrill.
Olivia paused at the bar, said something to the bartender, and then went to the back. She met Kate's eyes from across the room, and stayed locked on them as she closed the distance between them. Kate's breath stuttered and became faster, like she couldn't catch up with it. She kept her hand around the beer glass so Olivia wouldn't see it trembling.
Olivia wore a black blouse, the top three buttons undone to reveal the scoop neck of a tank top. Her jeans were tight, but not tight enough to give anything away. She stopped next to Kate's booth and said, "Hey."
Kate downed the last of her beer, pushed herself out of the booth, and stood up. She was dangerously close to Olivia, both of them swaying as if caught in the other's magnetic pull. Kate looked toward the door, just a quick flick of her eyes, and Olivia nodded briefly. The move caused her hair to fall forward over her eye and Kate reached up, brushing it away and letting her hand linger on Olivia's temple.
All around them, drinking continued unabated. It wasn't a cop bar. It was more exclusive than that.
Olivia rocked back on her heels and turned toward the door in the same motion. Kate had no choice but to follow. She ran her eyes down Olivia's back, back up to her hair, and self-consciously looked into the mirror behind the bar as they passed it. She could see the want in her eyes even on the move, and she quickly looked away, ashamed of how wanton she seemed.
It started with a body, as most chapters in their lives usually did. A dead man with a room full of child pornography prompted a call from Special Victims. Not even Castle could make light of the hell in that room. Detectives Benson and Stabler came down and took the case off their hands, not that any of them were complaining.
When Olivia stopped by the precinct to let Kate know the case was closed, Kate followed her downstairs. "How can you do that? How can you possibly do that day after day?"
Olivia shook her head. "You just find a way to cope."
"Maybe you can show me how you do it one of these days."
She distinctly remembered how Olivia had stopped on the stairs, how her fingers drummed the newel for a moment before she turned and looked back up at Kate. "You doing anything now?"
Outside the bar, full night had fallen. Kate looked down the street as they walked to Olivia's car, too used to having people's eyes on her. At crime scenes, at the office, with Castle. She was so accustomed to being under the microscope that she was sure her movements were being monitored. They reached the car, but Olivia went to the trunk instead of the driver's side door. Kate joined her, arms going around Olivia's waist and pulling her close. She tilted her head and, a moment later, Olivia's lips met hers.
Only their first kiss was tentative. After that, they were sure of what they both needed. Not absolution, not a deep romance. They just wanted release, something they could only get from someone like them. The same reason they didn't date other cops was the same reason they would never be able to have a meaningful relationship with someone who wasn't a cop. They could never be completely open with someone who had seen the shit they'd seen, and they could never bear the weight of another smeared soul.
Kate's tongue slipped into Olivia's mouth, her hands resting lightly on the belt of Olivia's jeans. She pushed her back, and Olivia let her, until they were leaning against the car. Olivia bent her knees and Kate stepped between her legs.
They made these dates once every few weeks. Not too often to make it a thing, to have to define what they were. It was just catharsis. One of them would call the other, and they would talk about their lives and their jobs. They would share the burden whenever they could. Then they would mention a bar, and a time, and that was all it took.
Olivia broke the kiss and ran her hands down the front of Kate's blouse. She licked her lips and met Kate's eyes, then pushed Kate away and twisted toward the front of the car. Kate stepped back, tugged the wrinkles from her blouse, and went around to the passenger side of the car.
When they backed out of the spot, Olivia said, "Yours?"
"Okay."
Olivia nodded and turned toward Kate's apartment building.
While they drove, Kate unbuttoned her jeans. She tugged the zipper down and lifted her hips off the seat so she could slide her hand down into them. She sighed, trembled, and bit her lip as she sank back into the seat and began to move her fingers in slow circles. She was just keeping the fire lit, just making sure the chain reaction Olivia started with her kiss didn't fizzle out. Olivia struggled to keep her eyes on the road. She dropped one hand from the wheel and let it rest between her legs, her eyes forming a triangle from the street ahead, the rearview, and the scene playing out in the seat beside her.
Each streetlight they drove beneath was like a frame in a motion picture; Kate's pants open, her fingers moving under the denim, and then darkness. Kate's head bowed forward, hair obscuring her face, biting her bottom lip, and then darkness. Kate leaning back in the seat, eyes dark and deep as she watched Olivia watch her, and then darkness.
She parked outside Kate's apartment building, near the front stoop, and unfastened her seatbelt. She licked her lips and looked at Kate, watching as she withdrew her hand, buttoned her pants, and opened her door. Olivia got out as Kate did, following her to the stoop. She focused on the way Kate's body moved; the swagger of her hips, the movements of her shoulders. She could picture the small of her back, beaded with sweat, and arched with pleasure, and the dull ache between her legs flared.
When Kate opened the door into the vestibule, Olivia pressed against her and pushed Kate into the building. Her hands slid up Kate's sides, cupping her breasts as she kissed her neck.
Kate closed her eyes and pressed back against Olivia. "You're going to get me evicted."
"You can live with me," Olivia said.
Kate took Olivia's hands off her body, but guided one down to her crotch. Olivia held on, rubbing through the denim, and then Kate pulled away from her. Kate smiled, her eyebrows rising, and backed away toward the stairs. "Come on," Kate whispered in a husky voice, and then turned and took the stairs two at a time. Olivia followed closely, reaching out one hand to touch Kate's hip when they reached the landing.
She spun Kate around and pressed her against the wall, knocking the breath out of her before pinning her against the wall. Kate sucked in a breath just before Olivia's lips descended, and they both moaned as Olivia thrust her tongue forward. She slid her hands up, under Beckett's shirt, curling her fingernails over bare flesh before Kate twisted away from her. "Not here," she said. She curled her fingers in Olivia's shirt and pulled her down the hallway.
Kate pulled out her keys to unlock her door, and Olivia pressed against her from behind. "Hurry," Olivia whispered, her lips against the shell of Kate's ear. Kate got the door open, turned, and pulled Olivia inside with one smooth motion. Olivia pushed the door shut, and stood in Kate's arms for a moment. Kate's breath pushed Olivia's hair out of her face, and Olivia cupped Kate's face with both hands before she leaned in for a slow, lingering kiss. Kate's tongue flickered against her lips, and she allowed it in with a moan.
As Kate began undoing the buttons of Olivia's blouse, Olivia slid her hands down to the button of Kate's jeans. She popped it open, tugged down the zipper, and then pushed the denim down over the curve of Kate's ass. She released them, and they pooled around Kate's ankles so she could step out of them.
Olivia glanced down; Kate's shirt was long enough so that the tail covered her underwear, but her legs were what interested Olivia. She dropped down, her shirt hanging open to reveal her bra, and ran her hands up the outside of Kate's thighs. Kate ran her hand through Olivia's hair and stepped back. "C'mon," she whispered, and walked backward into the living room. Olivia, guided by Kate's hand on her head, followed on her hands and knees. Kate stared down at her, smiling wickedly, until she reached the most comfortable armchair in her apartment.
She sat down and spread her legs, and Olivia knelt between them. She kissed first one thigh, then the other, and moved her lips up. Kate wore plain white underwear, already moist from the activity in the car, but Olivia ignored that for the moment. She undid the bottom three buttons of Kate's blouse, exposing her stomach. She leaned in and kissed Kate, swirling her tongue in her navel as she ran one hand up Kate's thigh. She lifted her head and kissed Kate's breast through her shirt and bra, curling two fingers and brushing the knuckles against the crotch of Kate's underwear.
Kate reached up and unbuttoned her own blouse, pushing it off her shoulders. She reached back, unhooked her bra, and let Olivia pull it away with her teeth. Olivia moved her hand faster between Kate's legs, finally pushing the underwear out of the way. Kate's breath caught as Olivia slipped one finger inside and brushed her tongue over Kate's nipple at the same time.
Kate reached up, holding onto the back of her chair as she lifted her hips to Olivia's hand. Olivia moved to the other breast, extending her thumb to circle Kate's clit. Kate arched her back, pressing her breast against Olivia's lips and tongue, and tightened her muscles around Olivia's fingers. She grunted quietly, her body moving under Olivia's attention, and bit her bottom lip as she came. Olivia moved her lips up to Kate's neck, licked and sucked, wrapping her free arm around Kate's waist to hold her as she came.
When Kate sagged against the chair, Olivia reluctantly pulled away from her and pushed herself up off the floor. Kate pulled her legs together, covering her crotch with delayed modesty. Olivia stood in front of her, staring at Kate's next-to-naked body, her breasts and stomach shining with the evidence of her kisses. Olivia met Kate's eyes and proceeded to undress herself. Kate ran her eyes down Olivia, tracing every bit of newly exposed flesh, licking her lips and rubbing her hand against her thighs as Olivia bent to push her pants and underwear off.
"Lie down," Kate said, her voice rough.
Olivia walked to the couch and lay down, rearranging the pillow behind her. Kate stood up and hooked her thumbs in her underwear, pulling them down before she crossed the room and covered Olivia's body with her own. She slipped her right leg between Olivia's thighs, raising her body until her thigh pressed against Olivia's center. They both drew a breath, and Kate braced her hands against the couch on either side of Olivia's head.
Kate pulled her other leg in, straddling Olivia's leg, and settled her body against Olivia's muscular thigh. With a shuddering breath, she rocked her body forward, and they both groaned with pleasure. Kate lowered her head and kissed Olivia, still moving her lower body, rocking with a familiar rhythm as Olivia bent her knee to press her thigh harder against Kate. Olivia brought her hands up and explored Kate's chest, teasing her nipples with quick passes of her thumbs. She turned her head and kissed Kate's arm.
"Look at me," Kate said, her voice rough with desire. "Olivia..."
Olivia managed to look up and open her eyes, meeting Kate's gaze. Kate smiled and kissed Olivia's lips. Olivia put her arms around Kate and pulled her down to her. Their breasts brushed with the motion of their hips, and both of them moaned at the shockwaves the contact sent through them. Olivia raked her fingernails over Kate's back as she came, and they kissed, and Kate slipped her tongue into Olivia's mouth to stifle her moans.
Finally, their bodies slick with sweat, Kate relaxed and settled between Olivia's legs. She rested her head on Olivia's chest, listening to the drumming of her heart grow ever-slower.

Kate rolled over in bed and blinked at the sunlight streaming through the window. Olivia was sitting in the window seat, one leg curled under the other, wearing only Kate's blouse from the night before. It was buttoned sloppily, revealing her cleavage and the curve of her hip. She was looking outside, but a Richard Castle book was open on her lap.
Kate sat up, the blanket rising with her to cover her breasts. "I hope you're not reading Nikki Heat again."
Olivia smiled without looking at her. The rising sun caught in her messy hair and formed a halo around her head. "Well, until you do that body shots thing with me, fiction will have to do."
Kate got out of bed, letting the sheet fall away from her body. The sound drew Olivia's eyes to her finally, and she admired the way Kate's muscles moved as she crossed the room. Kate plucked the book from Olivia's fingers and tossed it aside, not bothering to look where it fell. She touched Olivia's cheek, ran her thumb over Olivia's bottom lip, and then bent down to kiss her.
They had only discussed their time together once. Once was enough. Neither of them wanted the pressures or constrictions of a relationship, but sometimes it was nice to have something that was just beautiful in their lives. No death. No victims. Just a good morning kiss and maybe a quickie in the shower. Kate parted her lips, welcoming Olivia's tongue as she straddled Olivia's legs and settled down in her lap.
Olivia broke the kiss and moved her lips to Kate's neck. Kate tilted her head to give her more room, and opened her eyes to look out the window. The sun was starting to spread across the city, bringing to light all the pain and sorrow that the night had left behind. Soon, she would have to pull herself away from Olivia, and they would get dressed, and they would go out there and face that darkness on their own.
But for now, they had each other. Kate smiled. That would be enough to get her through whatever horrors the night had left her.
"Come on," she whispered. "Take me to the bath."
Olivia stood up and held on to Kate until her feet touched the ground. Kate's hand slid down Olivia's arm, leaving a trail of goosebumps in her wake, until she threaded their fingers together. They would take their time in the bath. They would wash away whatever hurt and bad memories had lingered, and then they would make love again. There was no rush. The new horrors could wait.
