Wow, you live in a really expensive part of the country for utilities. Or I live in a really inexpensive one. I mean, yes, I have a tiny place, but I've had electric bills as low as like $11.
A number of people in my local area recently got scammed by an allegedly cheap electricity provider - they looked much cheaper but they actually made that up by not providing off-peak rates, so it ended up more expensive over all. Just something to double check, if you have the peak/off peak system.
Thanks for the warning. I'll do some definite research on the other energy providers. (I've already excluded those with monthly variable rates and those who charge to cancel the service.) Mind you, I've never heard of peak/off-peak rates with electricity; around here, electric rates rates are set for X period of time (six months, a year, whatever). But I will definitely check, because I don't want to be taken in a scam.
Have you checked with your local Salvation Army? Ours currently has a program (run with grant money we received and sub-granted to them) where they will help pay the utilities of low income people. If they don't have anything like that, they may be able to refer you to another agency that is doing it. With the stimulus money given out by Congress, there may be money available now that wasn't in the past. Good luck.
In my job I write the checks for the public service agencies we fund through our CDBG and now HPRP Grants, and I'm always amazed at what's out there if you can get in touch with the right people.
