Job Openings in Kalamazoo - C.E.O., Techs, Sales

Mar 18, 2007 10:25

Due to the recent launch of the Geek Group's Avalon Research Facility (avalon.thegeekgroup.org) several new positions have opened up in the Geek Group executive team.

We are looking for someone to fill the position of C.E.O. of Applied Intellect, a local computer company. We are also looking to expand the technical and sales teams of AI with the hiring of 5 new techs, and 3 new sales people. This will be a radical change in the structure of AI and its largest growth spurt since 2003.

We are looking for the following people:

C.E.O. -
This person should have a working knowledge of how to manage a small business (including basic accounting, client management, a fierce work ethic, and the ability to make decisions under pressure). This is a salary position with bonuses tied to company revenue. This is not a 9-5 job and slack bastards who think that way shouldn't even think about applying. People with rabid motivation and an obsessive need to succeed are preferred. Candidate should be highly extroverted, wicked smart, and able to follow through on commitments. Prior experience in management preferred, but not required. This is a rare and incredible opportunity for the right person. AI is a computer company with a very unusual business model. The entire purpose for AI is to generate funding for The Geek Group (www.thegeekgroup.org).

Tech -
Experienced computer technician. Should have thorough experience in PC compatible hardware including all basic aspects of diagnostics, construction, and repair. Must have reliable transportation (we do on-site service calls in the Kalamazoo area). Flexible hours (we will work around your class schedule). Knowledge of Linux (especially Gentoo) is a bonus, but not required. Pay is on work completed with a bonus tied to company profits.

Sales -
We have sales positions open for inside/outside sales in the Kalamazoo and surrounding areas. You do NOT have to have a thorough knowledge of computers (that's what techs are for), you just have to be able to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. If you're a serious extrovert, a self starter and you can walk up to someone and say hello then you can succeed at this. You're selling computers, this isn't rocket science. You MUST have reliable transportation. We have flexible work hours for sales staff, full or part time positions open. This is a commissioned based position.

Applied Intellect is not the typical computer shop. We're not in business to screw people out of every dollar we can (which seems to be the primary business model in the computer world). Applied Intellect is a rock-n-roll shop, not a skinny-black-tie shop. We're here to help people. We're here to use our Geek Powers for good. We're NOT in business with the primary goal to simply make as much money as we can in the shortest amount of time. We believe that if we provide a quality skill and do quality work at a fair price that people will appreciate that and keep coming back. Because of this we have built a successful company with only word of mouth advertising. Our primary advertising is client referrals because our clients like us that much.

AI is a radical departure from a typical computer company. Some of the things that demonstrate our philosophy are the fact that we have NO BENCH FEE. If you walk into any other computer shop and set your computer on the bench they are going to charge you anywhere from $35 to $70 just to open it up and tell you what's wrong.

This doesn't include actually DOING anything, just telling you what they think is wrong.

Yeah, we don't do that shit here. We believe that if a client is cool enough to get off their ass and bring their computer to us that we can at the very least have a look at it and give them an educated opinion as to what is wrong at no charge.

No bench fees, because that's a dick thing to do. This simple thing alone has built us hundreds of great client relationships. It shows that we actually CARE about people.

We also have a 10-minutes and it's free rule. If a customer brings in their computer and it's something we can fix in under 10 minutes and doesn't require parts, we fix it for free. This is about 20% of the problems people have with their computers. It's amazing how often someone simply forgets something trivial (like turning the switch on the PSU on), plugs a cable in wrong, has a loose card or cable, etc). This saves us time on paperwork, and makes LOTS of people love us. It's just a nice thing to do.

We believe in charging a reasonable rate for our services. If you call Best Buy (the other Geeks ;) ) they will charge you $129 for an on-site service call. That's before they actually DO anything (hourly rates add on after that). And you pay that if the problem gets fixed or not.

Yeah. Not our style. On-site service calls anywhere in Kalamazoo County are $50 for the first hour and $50 for each hour after. And if we can't fix the problem, the client doesn't pay for it.

For in-house work we don't charge by the hour, we charge by the job. This way the client doesn't pay for all the time the tech spends scratching his ass trying to figure out what's wrong with the computer. And if we can't fix it, even if we spend 8 hours trying like hell to figure it out, they don't get charged. It's that simple. We don't get paid to TRY, we get paid to DO.

We're a computer company founded on helping people, treating people right, and a strong sense of ethics. For reasons that we still can't figure out these things seem to be rather rare in the IT world.

AI was founded as a way for The Geek Group to raise a consistent source of income without being tied to the grant cycle and without having to spend all our time begging people to donate money. It's out way of using our brains to pay our own way and build a school. With the Avalon project launch taking up so much of my time I simply do not have enough hours in the day to run both companies on my own. I can either shut down AI or find someone with the balls and brains to walk in to an established, successful company and take over the job of running the show.

The candidate hired for the C.E.O position would answer directly to me. You would have full authority to run the day to day operations of the company. This includes every aspect of that position, and all of the basic responsibilities thereof. They would have complete authority to hire and fire all of the AI staff, run the sales and technical sides of the business, everything. I do not have the time to baby sit and micromanage. Once you are thoroughly trained in the operations of the company (a couple weeks), it's your show.

Interested candidates should email cboden@thegeekgroup.org and put AI JOBS in the subject line. Send me an email with your contact info and/or resume and expect a call shortly.
