They could do what live action Sailor moon did with mogget (plush + cgi animation) and I would still be content because it's Sabriel.

The Lord of the rings diverted from the actual story quite alot though... adding in the whole bit with arwen was pointles...

BUt yes, i agree that mogget is very srew-up-able
then again, talking animals always end up fairly bad no matter how good you try and get them in a film

I think Mr.Nix would hold out for Tim Curry...I read that someplace that he would like for him to be Mogget (well the voice anyways) because he did such a great job doing the reading for the audio book (it was amazing!)

I don't know who could play the other characters though. I'm thinking maybe new comers for all of them? I'm so nervous about who would get picked as some of my favorite characters from book to movie adaptations have been horribly cast...but I trust in Mr.Nix, he is pretty 'on board' for this project.
