Of genealogy and technology

Back to college tomorrow - boo! This week has not been long enough at all. At least I didn't spend any of it doing homework so that is a Very Good Thing. Most of the week was actually taken up with doing more research into my family tree. I had to go into town on Thursday for an appointment at 9am - 9am!! - so I thought I might as well go to ( Read more... )

Yay for learning new and interesting genealogy stuffs! I wonder if any of your relatives wound up in Boston as a result of the Great Famine too. Certainly plenty of Irish folks did and maybe some of them decided to emigrate west instead of east. Something to look into in future maybe ( ... )

I'd originally written in my post something along the lines of, 'If the family had gone west instead of east, I'd have been American.' I did wonder about family members going to the US from Ireland, although the 1851 census has the father's aunt living with them which is interesting.

I've not had chance to install the Shell yet but I am hoping it will be good. I'm so disappointed that Canonical has removed even more customisation from Ubuntu so we now only have 2 themes to choose from. I mean, even Micro$oft give you more than that!

Great minds think alike. ;) That is interesting that the father's aunt was living with them. Hopefully you'll be able to find more info about all that the next time you have a look!

Yeah, agreed. Everyone's been complaining a lot about the lack of customisation in Unity since it first shipped. Really that's the only problem with it, aside from a few bugs; most of the issues that anyone's having with it are UI-related and would be eliminated if they could just customise the UI to their liking. It's supposed to be a bit more customisable in 12.04 but I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as much as we were used to with GNOME 2.x.

It doesn't make any sense. 11.04 had Unity and we still had loads of themes to choose from, install or customise. Now all we have is Ambiance and Radiance? Oh, and the High Contrast. It's ridiculous.

My family spilt itself in half in the Famine. Half went to Canada and the other half stayed in Belfast. You go over and down five generations and I've got a famous cousin (six times removed I believe if you go about it that way). If you chase down one branch of my tree that mysteriously goes Glasgow >> Edinburgh >> GENERATION MISSING >> Coventry... you get another surprise. Someone got someone pregnant and yet another famous branch on ye olde family tree. (As if being related to both sides of William Shakespeare's family isn't enough for my tree ( ... )

What exactly do you mean by 'being related to both sides of William Shakespeare's family'? His parents?

Sorry, it's an "our family"-ism meaning that I'm related to both the Ardens and the Shakespeares. If you go to the Wikipedia article on him, and check out the genealogy link there you'll actually be looking at a segment of my family tree. I've got one side traced back to the 900s and another to 1420ish. Some of them though take a lot of digging and finding things by random chance that fill out the holes.

Forgot to ask, are you using KDE now? I know you said you'd been using Mint at some point.

I also wanted to ask about the belated birthday parcel that you said you'd sent out at the end of last year or the beginning of this year. Did that actually get sent out, because nothing's arrived as of yet.
