Why We Fight

Ch 1

He’s looked through stacks and stacks of books and found nothing. Why can’t he find some kind of reference? He can’t lose Dean, not after everything they’ve gone through. A light coming through the window caught his eye and he saw the outline of a mushroom cloud way off in the distance. ‘Oh my God.’ Saw whirled around to look for Dean and noticed the room had changed; the windows were covered over with plastic and sealed with tape. He’s amazed to see that the books had been stacked neatly and covered with plastic as well. Now that the surface had been cleared of debris, the hardwood floors of the old farm house had been revealed. Who knew Bobby’s house could look so good? Sam rushed through the house, anxious to find Dean and saw that the cellar door was open. Bobby and Dean were hauling crates down the stairs while Ellen and Jo unloaded the two trucks. The Impala sat in the dilapidated shed, completely wrapped in plastic.

“Dude! You find that book you were whining about?”

Sam looked down and saw a thick tome in his hands. The runes on the front were unknown to him, but the sight of them sent a thrill through him and he looked up at Dean with a grin.

“Yeah.”

“Good ‘cause it’s time to go.”

“What?”

Sam felt his whole body shake and then he was suddenly looking into Dean’s impatient face.

“Dude! It’s noon. We need to get outta here now. It’s gonna take forever to get to Bobby’s as it is.”

Every word out of Dean’s mouth accentuated the burning ice pick stabbing him behind the eyes and Sam groaned.

“Oh shit! I thought the visions stopped after we killed the demon!”

“Aspirin… water… trash can…”

Dean moved quickly and the can was at the side of the bed before Sam rolled over and hung his face over it. Dean had already snagged the plastic bag; whoever cleaned the room was going to be pissed.

Sam rolled onto his back and accepted the glass of water and took a drink before answering Dean’s questioning gaze. “Call Bobby, it’s not demon related. I was looking out his window and saw a mushroom cloud go up in the far distance. And then suddenly everything was covered in plastic, windows sealed and we were loading supplies into the cellar.”

“Damn. Do you know when?”

“No but, you need to call him and tell him to gather supplies and have Ellen get Jo there. She was in my vision too.”

Sam sat up gingerly as Dean picked up several bags, calling Bobby on his way out of the door. He took the time to use the bathroom and brush his teeth since they wouldn’t be stopping for more than just gas on the way. He finished dressing and then grabbed the last of their gear before heading out. Thankfully, their car was right outside the door and Sam only had to walk about five feet before loading the bags in the trunk. When Dean closed the lid Sam noticed a familiar looking car parked two spaces over. He shook his head. This headache had to be messing with him because there was no way Jessica’s cousin could be in freakin’ Goodland, Colorado. Not now… not after this freaked out vision… “Oh God…” Sam groaned. The sound of a door opening behind and to his right was drowned out by the sound of screeching of metal and an image of a gorgeous ’69 Roadrunner being smashed into by another vehicle. The scene changed so fast, nausea rushed in and he saw Jessica’s cousin limping down a stretch of road that could be found almost anywhere in Kansas.

Sam crashed to his knees as her voice faded in an out, echoing through his head.

::Sam… need to listen… not much time… tell him… Don’t trust Constantino... Sam… Love you…::

“Sam!”

He felt Dean’s hands take hold of his head. The midday sun made it difficult to open his eyes; forget about talking just yet.

“Another one? Shit Sammy!”

He heard footsteps approaching.

“This is bad. Oh God, your nose is bleeding.”

He felt something wipe at his upper lip and opened his eyes to look into his brother’s worried ones.

Sam screwed his eyes shut as an all too familiar voice asked, “Hey guys, you need some help there? Sam? Is that you?” Dark eyes peered over Dean’s shoulder and Sam moaned.

“Jake, what are you doing here?”

“I’m headed home to see my family. What are you guys doing here?” He looked at Dean. “You’re Dean right?” Jake looked around expectantly and took a step around Dean to get closer to Sam. “Jessica with you? Did you guys move? ‘Cause the number I had for you was disconnected… What?” The look on Sam’s face was enough to alarm him and when the younger man met his gaze with watery eyes, Jake felt his knees weaken. “Please… tell me she’s okay.”

Sam was feeling pretty disoriented at this point and although he made a valiant effort, his explanation was disjointed. “There was a fire Jake… I didn’t know it was real until it was too late. Couldn’t get her out...”

Sam grabbed his jacket and pulled him down as he collapsed and Jake looked to Dean for help.

“Keep your eyes on the road Jake no matter what. She said Constantine... don’t trust him Jake!”

Sam had put on quite a lot of muscle since the last time they had seen each other and Jake couldn’t get enough leverage to pull away. “What’s he talking about? What’s happened to Jessica? Do my Mom and Dad know?” He fell forward as Sam passed out and pulled him down before he could wrestle out of the larger man’s grip. “What the hell is going on?”

“Hold on a second.” Dean’s voice was gruff with emotion as he drug Sam’s limp body to the Impala and stuffed him in the passenger seat. Jake started as he saw Sam’s hand whip out and pull Dean in. After a moment, Dean rose up and slammed the door shut. He turned toward Jake and crossed the short distance between them. He stopped and looked at Jake for a moment before scrubbing his face. “Look, we don’t know each other, but I’m assuming you’re related to Jessica in some way?”

“She’s my cousin. Her parents died when she was little and she came to live with us. We grew up together.” He gestured toward Sam. “I met Sam when he and Jess started dating.” A new wave of dread washed over him. “She thought it was a big laugh that we were all from Kansas. Please, tell me what’s happened.”

Dean looked up at the clear afternoon sky and swallowed hard. “End of October last year our dad went missing and I picked Sammy up from Stanford to help me find him. After a few days, I dropped him off back home but realized after I got down the street he had my cell so I went back.” Thinking about the first time he almost lost Sam brought back the memory of Cold Oak and his voice wavered. “Their apartment was already blazing when I pulled up. I almost didn’t get him out. Jessica was dead before I dropped him at the apartment. The Marshal said the fire was set on a delay.”

Jake was pale as he leaned on the fender of his car. “But… Who would do that to Jess? What was Sam talking about? Did he have some sort of breakdown or something?”

Dean scowled at him for a minute and then with an air of urgency he said, “Look there’s a lot of shit about to happen. Not sure when, but wherever you end up; you need to supply yourself with essentials. Stay away from military bases and large cities. And if you know someone named Constantine, don’t trust him.” Dean started to turn away and Jake grabbed his jacket.

“Wait! This is crazy. What are you talking about?”

“Dude! We need to be on the road, but Sam insisted I tell you… I know this is going to sound crazy, but Sam has visions. Yeah… Look, I thought it was nuts too, but… They started happening about a month before our dad went missing. Sam didn’t say anything until way after Jessica was killed because he thought they had been nightmares or he’d imagined it. But it’s happened too many times to be a fluke.”

Dean watched Jake put it together and the man’s face grew dark. “Don’t! Don’t you dare blame him! He almost died from the guilt he felt. It was all I could do to get him out of that fucking apartment. Sam couldn’t have done anything to save her but that didn’t stop him from trying.” Dean pinned Jake with eyes burning dark hazel with grief and desperation. “There are things that exist in this world that most people refuse to see or believe. Sam sometimes gets a glimpse of tragedy and at times we can prevent them; but when we can’t he blames himself even though most of the time it’s all we can do to just pin point what part of the country his vision happened in.”

Jake was silent for so long that Dean started to walk away; they needed to be on the road, headed for South Dakota.

“Wait! I heard you ask him if he was having a second one. What did he see?”

Dean looked at him with a bleak expression. “It’s bad. Man-made end of the world kinda bad. We gotta get on the road. Take care Jake and remember what Sammy told you.” He walked around and climbed into the driver’s seat. The engine started with a growl and the black muscle car peeled out of the lot toward the highway.

Jake leaned against his car; rooted to the spot long after the black Impala growled its departure north. He was overwhelmed with grief, but thoughts of his family and his reason for going home after five long years intruded and enabled him to move. He loaded his car and headed toward home. Much like most of the populace did when coming into contact with Supernatural related incidents; he forgot the sharp details and by the time he reached Jericho, only remembered meeting Sam and his brother. The warnings had been dismissed as possible delirious ravings. Although Jessica was still a sharp ache of grief when he thought about her, the stress of why he was headed for home began to cloud over everything else. He didn’t want to bring up Jess if it would interfere with accomplishing his goal. He’d learned to block out a lot of things when the situation warranted it.

It was only after New Bern began bombing them did Jake remember Sam’s warning.
