Writing Update

Elections: I am still working on this, albeit slowly. I've been doing that thing where I actively avoid writing by going and scouring norsekink for gen fic. :P  I have finished another pair of chapters (there are already 8 chapters- 4 proper chapters+4 short bits of epistolary) and sent them to mebh_me for editing. That puts me about 6k off from the end of the ( Read more... )

Thanks!

I'm finding it helpful for me to write these things down. Mostly just to keep track of what I'm doing and what my priorities are.

I came across George R.R. Martin's rantings on fanfiction the other day, where he was on about how it was theft and how it was damaging to writers and they shouldn't do it. Pbpbpbpbt.

Yeah, I've heard George R. R. Martin has fits about people wanting to write in his 'verse. Ann Rice is the same way, and I remember the Pinis stepped around the idea by saying, "You can use our world, but you have to create your own characters and not write/draw ours."

The whole "I don't understand why people want to write fanfiction; it's lazy and a waste of time" thing makes me sad. Because fanfiction is the reason I write at all. If I ever get published for my own fiction, it's because fanfiction gave me permission to write in the first place (because anyone can do it! I was so intimidated by the fact that I wasn't... y'know... Asimov or Bradbury that I didn't even want to try.) and a space to talk about writing and develop as a writer.

The hilarious thing about Ann Rice and GRRM etc. is that authors are usually the ones who are vocal against fanfiction, but of course (with a few exceptions), books don't inspire large fanfiction fandoms. So they're all "nooooo don't mess with my babies!" when nobody really wants to mess with their babies anyway.
