Author’s Note: This was a prompt given to me by
bdaddydl and
lefthanded0 where Chuck tries to explain a show (Doctor Who was the recommended show, but I’m way behind on it and I don’t think Chuck would start anybody on a Moffat show on a season finale) to Sarah. This is how I ran with it. With love to my favorite show, which I will miss after it finishes airing on Friday.
“And the redhead is…who, again?”
Chuck clicked pause. There was a lens flare on the frame, which would’ve caused Morgan, had he not stumbled out earlier mumbling excuses about Alex yelling at him for not taking part in early morning feedings and somehow the spawn being half-Casey, to take a drink. There was also a very attractive redhead on the screen. “That’s Olivia,” he said.
Sarah squinted. “No, it’s not, it’s…Fo-fo-livia? B-Olivia? The other Olivia!”
“Fauxlivia,” Chuck said, laughing. “And that’s Olivia.”
“Argh.” Sarah leaned her head against the back of the couch. “Olivia is a blonde.”
“She was last season, but she dyed her hair red to infiltrate Fauxlivia’s world. Now she’s a redhead, and Fauxlivia’s a blonde.”
“I’ve read DARPA briefings less confusing than this show.”
“Keep in mind, right now she thinks that she’s Fauxlivia. That’s why she keeps seeing Peter, and he keeps doing the ‘I’m clearly losing my mind’ trick they always do in science-fiction shows where somebody disappears when a bus goes by.” Chuck couldn’t stop the smile-he knew he was probably going to pay for it, and he did appreciate that Sarah was trying to like some of the same things he did-but her general aggravation with science-fiction shows was a nonstop source of delight to him.
“And the others think she’s Fauxlivia?” Sarah said, lifting her head.
“Except for Broyles.”
“Who is…?”
“The guy from The Wire.”
“Oh! Her boss,” Sarah said. She’d liked The Wire. But then, she’d watched the first two seasons of Fringe before Quinn, and she’d watched The Wire after Quinn. Perhaps, Chuck thought, picking a confusing show to try and get more of Sarah’s memories to come back had been a bad idea.
“Right.”
“And Fauxlivia is hanging out on the other side, completely fine with some impostor living her life?” Sarah asked.
“Seems to be,” Chuck said. “I haven’t actually seen what happens yet. But you know what?” He started to get up to go switch the DVD.
Sarah, even if some of her memories might be missing a year later, still had her ninja-like reflexes. “What are you doing?” she asked.
“I’m going to start it at season one.”
Sarah frowned. “I already said I don’t want to force you to watch something you’ve already seen all over again.”
“It’s been like eighteen months since we watched the first two seasons.” When her frown didn’t abate, Chuck gave her a gentle poke in the shoulder. “Rule one of being a nerd: re-watching things is not only acceptable, it’s encouraged.”
“But you shouldn’t have to do things again because I don’t remember them.”
Oh, he was definitely going to pay for this, Chuck thought. He held up the Season One DVD box, with its picture of Anna Torv. “My life proves the point that complicated things involving hot blondes in no way equals a hardship.”
Sarah stuck her tongue out at him. “You’re lucky I love you,” she said, and Chuck changed the DVD.
