One thing I never understood about army uniforms:

Why do they make them bright colours? They're hardly inconspicuous, and they're the ugliest things I've seen in a long while.

Although the blood barely shows on this one.

Does anyone know how to clean wool? This thing is rather disgusting filthy Like Corporal Nobbs' pajamas dirty ( Read more... )

Wear something else, man.

You okay?

I don't plan on wearing it, but if I'm going to keep it at all, it needs to be clean.

Yes, yes, I'm fine.

Most of my clothes are wool. I will show you.

Is there blood on your clothes as well as dirt?

Just make sure not to find reason to stab me again. As much as you can control, of course.

On a battlefield, the only way to distinguish between a friend and an enemy is by the colors the man is wearing. Dark, dull colors are more difficult to see through dirt and blood.

What I don't understand is why they are made of wool. Soldiers might as well go into battle naked for all the protection wool gives them.

Yes, but why would you want your enemy to see you better? Wouldn't it be easier to win if they couldn't see you?

I imagine it's cheaper. That's usually how armies work, I've noticed.

Before a battle, aye, keeping your movements secret will leave the enemy unprepared for your attack, but once the battle's joined, your enemies can see you whether you want them to or not. Thousands of men and horses can only go unnoticed for so long.

Lords and knights can afford their own armor, and the common men can usually afford to outfit themselves in leather.

A fair point indeed, but surely a crossbow is easier to aim at a bright red coat than a darker one, even if it was on horseback.

Crossbows have been invented that can pierce even metal armour.

Admittedly, I know very little about how warfare is practiced, but surely these things are quite true.
