Possibly one of the best modern books I've ever read is World War Z by Max Brooks. It's been years since I read a book that blew me away like this - I found myself reading and believing the story completely. It's very, very modern but I think it will stand time and not become dated.

Adam Haslett's "You Are Not A Stranger Here" - it's a few years old, but it would blow my socks off if I were wearing any.

One really good literary book that I read several years ago is "Cry, the Beloved Country" by Alan Paton. Not "up and coming", but still very good.

A recent book in economics that you may find interesting is Thomas Woods' "Meltdown". I've not read it, but I've heard very good things about it.

Published in 2009: A Maddness of Angels.

I haven't finished it yet -- I was forced by the need for sleep to stop reading last night. It is great prose, IMHO. Fantasy novel set in London.

It is the author's first published novel.
