On not being welcome

Over the past two weeks, I've gotten into no fewer than three different heated conversations with acquaintences on immigrants in British society. In each, they started on an anti-immigrant tirade when I politely reminded them that I am in fact an immigrant too. One was embarassed and back tracked, one claimed that what they really meant by "immigrant" was "assylum seekers" (because goodness knows they don't have the worst end of every stick) and one told me, flatly, to go "home". The worst part? This last person is in my seminar group and before his, frankly, bigoted, comments, I rather liked him.

Those encounters plus several recent headlines really make me rather tempted to take my taxes and my work ethic and go somewhere else. The problem of course is that the uk isn't alone in their hatred, pretty much every other country on the planet is the same. I guess I'm just stuck challenging the stereotypes as I find them. Just hope those aren't at job interviews. Really need to look into getting those buttons made. . .
