[public] Charities

Happy new year, everyone! May your 2009 be filled with joy, love and robots.

One of my less silly new year's resolutions is to remember that it's better to light a candle than to curse not being Edison.

In that spirit, I would love it if people were to recommend their favourite charities.

I still recommend Fred Hollows Foundation. I don't know of anyone with a better proven track record: one person cured of blindness for every US$53 they have received (cost adjusted etc.). At the very least, use this as a measuring stick to which to compare other charities in different areas (i.e. ask yourself what the others would achieve per $50).

That's what it's called! Thank you -- emailing you about this was on my vague mental todo list, as while I could remember the very good points you made about this, I couldn't remember the actual figures involved. :)

I try to donate regularly to Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS, but I also know that the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity are the two that were most applauded by friends I had in New Orleans during and after the disaster.

Follow-up post: my friend rotem suggested (and I ended up donating my NaNoMoney to) Medecins Sans Frontieres, "MSF is an independent humanitarian medical aid agency committed to two objectives: providing medical aid wherever needed, regardless of race, religion, politics or sex and raising awareness of the plight of the people we help."
