Oh yes! One of my best childhood memories is standing on thin ice near the bank of a small frozen lake and yelling to my mum "Look, it's thick enough to hold me!" After which, of course, it gave way, and I had a very cold bath. Luckily, we were near home and it wasn't deep. But I scared my mum all right, and had to stay the rest of the day in bed in case I'd develop pneumonia or something (I didn't). :)

You get big sheets of ice quite often in the Highlands in winter. Quite disconcerting if you don't have the relevant gear.

Dammit, I need to find another walking partner...
